I rave from time to time about Pliny the Elder, in case by some miracle you guys haven't figured out...

Once a year for a couple of weeks, Russain River Brewery put out a version of Pliny the Elder called Pliny the Younger.

Consider this your announcement that PTY will be in Oregon for the next couple of weeks - then we will mourn the passing of the PY season for another year.

SO -- Head for you local pub that serves PTE and see if they have the super version.

WARNING!!

This beer is not for everyone. 11.5 ABV , hoppier than GOD. They only serve this stuff in the 10 oz. shot glasses to protect us from ourselves.

But if you are a hop freak like me - this stuff is a treat. Just don't go to my pub. I lay claim to that stuff.

Does Green Dragon pour Pliny also? Anyone know of any places on the West Side where one might find a tap?

Well, I do not know what kind of beer Pliny the Younger makes, and I am pretty sure I do not care, but Pliny the Younger himself made one effective Roman govenor when it came to the persecution of Christians, whom he made recant fundamental tenets of their religion, and contrary to their religious beliefs, made them sacrifice and pray to the Roman gods. These acts were forced on the Christians at pain of death. And, Pliny had the death penalty administered plenty. I know one of his letters survives in which he inquired about how to treat these "pagans" as he referred to Christians.

He served around the time of Antonine emperors, specifically, I think, though I have not looked it up, Marcus Aurelius, who also had no love for Christians, but wrote a pretty decent book in Meditations.

When you propose a toast with Pliny the Younger in hand, you might also propose to remember the god fearing Christians he offed, albeit long ago. I think Pliny himself would appreciate the irony.

You Philistines.

Just as we celebrated the coming of the PTY season, we now mourn its passing for another year. Sad

The pubs aren't expecting any more kegs this year.

This time around it was kind of crazy. at a couple of pubs the kegs would be gone two hours after they were tapped. Folks were calling around town and the Barkeeps were keeping a list of which pub would tap a keg at a certain hour. my pub was limiting people to two ten oz. glasses. The Horsebrass was saving a keg for the regulars and told them when they would tap it. One pub went trough its weekly allowance of three kegs in seven hours.

I walked into my local pub, which bills itself as an Irish pub and standard fare for folks is Guinness, Murphy's and Black and Tans, and every person in the place but one had a glass of PTY in front of them. Even the Pliny the Elder sat in the kegs. That's the only good part. Now they won't run out of PTE halfway through the weekend. cheers

One wag said that all the fuss was just a fad. I said, "Well, yeah, like crack cocaine is a fad".
