Campbell Named WCC Player of the Week
SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland senior point guard T.J. Campbell has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week after leading the Pilots to home wins over San Diego and Saint Mary’s, the league announced on Monday. Campbell averaged 21.0 points, 5.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds, including clutch plays late in the overtime win over Saint Mary’s. It was a historic honor for Campbell as he became the first player in school history to win the league’s weekly honor three times in the same season.
The Phoenix, Ariz. native matched a career-high with 24 points and added seven assists and three steals in a thrilling 80-75 win over Saint Mary's on Saturday. He scored the game-tying layup with 25 seconds left in regulation to send it to overtime and then clinched the game with two free throws with eight seconds remaining in OT. He was 9-for-16 from the field, 2-for-6 from the three-point line and 4-for-4 at the foul line.
Campbell scored a game-high 18 points with four assists and three rebounds in a 70-56 win over San Diego on Thursday. He went 5-for-10 from the three-point line in the game.
After the weekend home sweep, Portland (16-8, 7-3) moved within a half game of Saint Mary’s for second place in the WCC standings.
The Pilots will make their final regular season road trip of the season this week in Southern California. Portland will take on Pepperdine on Thursday at 5 p.m. (FSN Prime Ticket) and then face Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 7 p.m. Thursday will be on 970 AM, while Saturday will be on 95.5 The Game FM on the radio.
