u20 Camp

Post by PurpleGeezer on Wed Dec 09, 2009 10:40 am

We have two players who were named to the roster for the upcoming u20 camp.

Cloee, Charney, and Kendall Johnson will be heading to the camp in Boulder which begins on Saturday.

I guess this means Cloee is fully healed. Yay!
Interesting that Kendall is listed as a defender?

She was out on the artificial-turf practice field banging balls at Kelsey. She looked pretty full-strength to me, but in the short time I was watching, I did not see her run.

It looked to me that Cloee was healthy at the end of the season. She was kicking the ball around in warm-ups. I think they must have decided that she was going to redshirt the season and held her out.

Charney was born August 1990; Danielle in November 1989. January 1 may be the magic date?

On the US national team web site, Danielle is listed on the U23 roster.

In general for youth soccer the cut off date for any given age designation is July 31st, so yes Danielle is about 4 months older than the cutoff date and actually Charney is just a few weeks too old to qualify for u-19.

(Also younger players can always "play up" as many age brackets as their skill allows)

There's also that they bump people up to the next age group if they want to see younger kids in preparation for tournaments down the road.

It makes no sense to give a slot on the u20's to a kid who won't be eligible when the next u20 WC comes around.

Was she really still redshirt eligible at the end of the year?? How many games did she end up playing?
I guess I always assumed that the redshirt option had been burned...

She was indeed redshirt eligible. she played in the first 5 games and sat at the Illinois game and afterwards.

Those were all in the first half of the season and was less than 30% of the scheduled games. She gets a do-over.

We have a new addition to our freshman class next year! cheers cheers

Having seen how close the final four games were I'm convinced that Cloee and MichE were the difference between a third national title and another QF exit.

A little blurb about Cloee from Desert Crown, a blog about "soccer as it relates to Utah". Gotta love the internet!

When I look back at our two championship years, one of the things that strikes me is that we were relatively free of injuries. Soccer has a certain amount of luck, and a good chunk of that luck relates to injuries--or lack thereof.

It is not unreasonable to assume that had Cloee played at A&M that the result would have been better. That, in turn, would have given us a #1 seed (well, given the logic we've seen the commitee use, maybe I shouldn't assume that) and a likely berth in the College Cup.

But we did have injuries this year. That's soccer.
