Soccer America on the game:

* FOXHOVEN NETS FOUR MORE. Danielle Foxhoven became the first player in Portland history with two four-goal games in the same season when she scored four times in the No. 2 Pilots' 8-0 win over San Francisco. Foxhoven also scored four goals against Gonzaga in a 7-0 win. She has has now recorded three hat tricks and 21 goals this season. Sophomore Halley Kreminski became the fifth different Pilot to record a hat trick this season when she scored the last three goals against USF to the delight of 4,059 Portland fans who withstood the cold and rain.

Wouldn't you rather get beat by a higher ranked team than a lower ranked team? I am by no means crying "woe is us!" and it is great to see both SCU and OSU creep in there.

Either way I am incredibly happy with this team and I wish I could see them play this fall! The Friday-night atmosphere at Merlo is one that I miss greatly.

So we are finally the consensus #2 team in the country.

Win our last two games and we should be a consensus #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Anything other than a #1 seed would be criminal, IMHO.

Question: Does our ridiculous goal differential help our RPI in any way?

No.

the official NCAA policy is to ignore scores and concentrate on results. That goes across all sports and is somewhere in the manual.

It's got to get people's attention, though.

Goal differential only really works within conference (or an individual sporting league), where everyone plays everyone else the same number of times. I mean otherwise teams could pad their rosters with home and homes with Alabama State and gain in the national rankings.

Soccer America Women's Team of the Week
Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009 7:00 AM ET
[COLLEGE] For the third time this year, Portland sophomore Danielle Foxhoven is the Soccer America Women's Player of the Week, earning the honor for games played Oct. 19-25 thanks to two-goal and four-goal performances in WCC wins for the No. 2-ranked Pilots. For the Soccer America Women's Team of the Week ...

GOALKEEPER
Rachel Bachtel (Vanderbilt), Jr.
Made six saves in 3-0 win over Mississippi State and four saves in 1-0 win over ranked Mississippi for her third straight shutout.

DEFENDERS
Brittney Macdonald (Miami, Fla.), Jr.
Played key role in defensive effort that limited North Carolina to 13 shots in Hurricanes' 1-0 victory.
Julie Scheidler (Notre Dame), Jr.
Anchored defense and added assists in 2-0 wins over Villanova and Georgetown.
Ella Stephan (Florida State), Soph.
Scored winner against North Carolina (3-2) on header off with 12 seconds left in overtime and anchored defense that shut down UNC late and then shut out N.C. State (2-0) three days later.

MIDFIELDER
Red Nixon (Oregon State), Sr.
Set up tying goal and scored winning goal in 2-1 victory over ranked USC.

FORWARDS
Heather Berg (Stetson), Sr.
Set school records for goals and points in a game with final four goals and two assists in 7-0 victory over East Tennessee State.
Danielle Foxhoven (Portland), Soph.

Correct. He may in fact have picked us as low as fifth. So I should say that we received at least 29 second place votes.

The only other possibilities that I can determine (aside from 29 second place votes and 3 thirds) would be: 30 second place votes, one third, and one fourth; and 31 second place votes and one fifth. All in all, though, not too shabby.

Hard to see us not getting a #1 seed with a win on Friday.

Do they seed the #2s by rank so that the lowest-ranked #1 gets the highest-ranked #2? Seems like that happened last year when Stanford drew us in the same bracket. If we are overall #3 (or maybe even #2), then we would avoid FSU and UCLA until the Final Four. I'd sure like to not play UCLA or Stanford in the quarterfinals this year!

Polls and news Empty playoff venues

Post by color me purple Mon Nov 02, 2009 5:53 pm

How and when do they determine the venue for the various rounds of the playoffs. I was under the impression that if you got a number #1 seed, that you would be playing at your home field but I found out this weekend that that is not necessarily the case.

When would we find out when the first/second and third rounds of the playoffs will be held. Can someone please tell me. I would love to book tickets early!

Ordinarily, the higher seed gets to host matches in the third round and the quarter-finals, so if we're one of the four #1 seeds we should be at home for those rounds (assuming we get there).

The first round is more problematic because the NCAA tries to minimize travel costs. If we have at least one team (ideally two) within driving distance (500 miles) that makes the tournament but is not a seed, then we will likely host the first weekend. All four NW Pac-10 teams would qualify for distance as partners, but two teams from the same conference cannot be in the same first-two-round pod, so two Pac-10 teams couldn't be sent here. PSU would of course qualify if they win their conference tournament and get a spot. If PSU qualifies, then it seems like a slam dunk that they, one Pac-10 team, and UP would play here along with someone from a greater distance. If PSU does not qualify, it is likely that a Pac-10 team would come here along with 2 outside teams. That is what happened last year with WSU, Texas, and Northern Arizona.

If the matches are played at UP, they have informed season ticket holders that the games at Merlo would most likely be held on Friday evenings, with a Sunday second-round game on the 15th.

Some posters are much better informed about these things than I, so please correct any mis-statements. Smile
