vs Gonzaga University
UofP 7 - Zags 0
Danielle Foxhoven was brilliant tonight. 2 shots on goal for the Zags and they came at the
very end of the match. The midfield flat out shut them down. Kelsey could of knitted
everybody a sweater to keep us all warm. Fantastic atmosphere in the student section.

Re: vs Gonzaga University
It's hard to know where to start regarding kudos to Pilot players. Here's a start:
- Kristen Kelly had a very solid game filling in for Michelle O. She also had a nice assist.
- Taylor Brooke is fun to watch. I love her energy.
- Kassi made it on to the field! Go Kassi!!!
- And I guess we can't forget Danielle's hat trick plus one.

Re: vs Gonzaga University
Very solid performance tonight.
Danielle is the Fox in the Box. Not just the four goals but the all around play. Laid the ball off for her temamates and is very confident right now.
First half Zags had no answer for pace of Michelle E and Kendra and Kendall. (Left defender in particular will have nightmares about Kendra running her ragged all game). Keelin and Sophie just controlled the middle and it was play after play at the byline and the goal. And with UP up by two Danielle takes the ball round the keeper and is felled just outside the box. Ref had no hesitation in the red card: which was totally the right call; clear path to the goal etc. Game over.
Gonzaga was unlucky to play the Pilots after the last game. There was going to be no let up tonight and they just kept playing: even with everyone off the bench playing in the second half. Nice showing by Emma, Taylor, Charney, Janelle, Sara, Elinor. Two goals taken well by Hallie, and she could have had more. I like the look of Molly Klier: played very composed game at center defense and left d. Good speed to the ball and a very good first touch.
Very nice to see Kassi back on the field although worrying that Michelle O had to sit out the game. Word is that they are monitoring an irregular heartbeat or some such. Cloee could be back in action next week is the rumor.
Kristen Kelly had antherr strong game in the middle of the defense and played all 90 minutes.
Gonzaga are 6-7 on the season so not the strongest team that UP will play but all credit to Pilots who just dominated in every way tonight.

Whoopie, copying and pasting from nc-soccer works! (I just copied and pasted Gonzaga's record so far this season from the nc-soccer website, and now I'm adding this above what I pasted.)
This shows Gonzaga's record so far this year, with the records of Gonzaga's opposing teams. Here are the results I find most interesting, other than the Pilots' 7-0 win: Lost to Washington State 3-0; lost to USC 2-0; lost to ucla 2-0; lost to Washington 3-1.
8/23/2009 vs. Montana 2-10-0 W 3-0
8/28/2009 vs. McNeese St. 2-9-2 W 3-1
9/3/2009 vs. Washington St. 7-3-1 L 0-3

Re: vs Gonzaga University
Things I liked tonight (in no particular order):
Halley: charging goalie, diving to reach the headers
Elinor using her body to protect the ball when receiving it with her back to the defender, attacking with the ball; she has the size & speed to become quite a weapon
Taylor attacking with the ball
Sophie being more involved on offense than she was against WSU
Michelle E being such an attack weapon, almost always making good things happen
Kassi getting on the field
Kendra & Jessica repeatedly attacking down the right side, and the offensive patterns of the other players to get open in front of the goal for the crosses
Molly & Emma looking good again
Dani involved in the passing game

Re: vs Gonzaga University
This was an offensive clinic but, though I'm reluctant to say it, it was almost too easy. UP was both more skilled and faster at virtually every position. In the long run we may be better served by games like WSU last week, where the opposition was both physical and speedy enough to challenge a high percentage of our passes.

Re: vs Gonzaga University
I think you need a mix of both types of games. This type of game gives the bench players game experience and builds their confidence. It helps the team stay a team, everyone participating in games. It gives the starters a chance to be on the field with the bench players as well so should it become necessary for a Kristen Kelly to start due to an injury to M.O. her teammates know what to expect from her on the field and she knows what to expect from her teammates. These types of games also provide the coaching staff with a better idea of how the bench players respond to game situations and their compatibility on the field with their teammates.

Re: vs Gonzaga University
Beating the Zags for the 18th time in 18 tries is target practice as usual for the Pilots. The result was assured with the first goal, which came at the halfway mark of the first half. But Michelle E. set the tone from the opening kickoff by taking the ball solo all the way to the Bulldogs' touch line -- too bad she didn't score or set up a score on that run, but it was a thing of beauty and the start of the nightmares for the outmatched defense. Gonzaga had no pan except to play physical (lots of hard fouling) but unlike the Cougars they showed no ability to counterattack ordo anything positive with the ball. The fouling backfired. Once the Buldogs went down a player due to the keeper's red card, the floodgates opened even wider.
The lopsided score let Kassi make her season debut -- a welcome sight -- and Elinor show her best play of the season with some nice runs and passes.
Anyone else out there want to see Jessica play forward? (I can dram, can't I?) She has the speed, passing touch and nose for the goal to do it. Few defenders can get forward and create havoc in the opponent's end like she does.
Nine goals in three games for Dani -- that is some lights-out shooting.

Re: vs Gonzaga University
At least Gonzaga can take comfort in the fact that the NCAA doesn't even start to keep track of lopsided losses until there are at least 9 goals against. Alabama State leads that dubious category with losses of 14-0 (twice), 15-0, 11-0, 9-0, 17-1. Yikes.

I would also love to see Jessica play forward. Her defense is too good to have her move there, but I would love to see it one game. Or one half.
