Tidbits From GU Board Empty Tidbits From GU Board

Post by ShipstadPilot11 Sun Sep 27, 2009 7:37 am

I was trolling the GU boards, to kill some time, and found this topic on which WCC players will cause the most problems for GU. The discussion is interesting as an overview of who the top non-GU players are in the conference. It is also interesting to see the mentality of GU (its fans, at least) as they head into the upcoming season.

Of the Pilots, TJ and Nik get the most mentions, with Luke and Jared also popping up.

"I agree on TJ Campbell. He's dangerous. Take Campbell out of the game and you've cut off the head of the snake."

From this topic and others, it seems that our friends in Spokane aren't too concerned with UP or anyone else in the WCC.

"I don't worry about this squad winning the WCC outright. No offense to Portland, St. Mary's and other league foes, but this team has more talent up and down its roster." Link.

I think GU has the right to be confident, but personally, I would be a little concerned with Portland. Then again, I am biased.

Tidbits From GU Board Empty Re: Tidbits From GU Board

Post by onetouchfutbol Sun Sep 27, 2009 7:51 am

I can see why they aren't worried; we got our tails kicked by Gonzaga when we played them head-to-head last year. Yes, they did have some key losses, however, they still have a proven system, Bolden, a pointguard who had a game-winning shot in the NCAA tourny, and a young, developing center (Sacre) among other things. I wouldn't say that we ended last year as strongly as we started it. We match up extremely well with them and any team in our conference this year, however, we have to go out and prove it all over again with a much tougher schedule than last year. I want to see how this team bounces back from losses...

Tidbits From GU Board Empty Re: Tidbits From GU Board

Post by ShipstadPilot11 Sun Sep 27, 2009 8:47 am

I definitely agree with you, AJ, in that we have a lot to prove this year and that we didn't end last year as strongly as we could (should) have. However, I think that Coach Scott has shown that he can help the guys make vast improvements over the summer and I expect us to come out looking much better than last year (as we should) and play like a team that wants it more than any other team.

As I recall, we have been competing with Gonzaga at the half for the last two years (playing in Portland) and then they have seemed to run away a little bit in the second half. Granted, GU has been called a "second-half team" by many people, but I think that competing for the first half is a good starting point from which we can build.

In my opinion, one thing that GU has going for them this year is a much healthier team attitude. I'm not saying that they've had an unhealthy atmosphere in the past but I think that the departure of Pargo and Heytvelt and the infusion of young, eager players could develop a team that has a positive and team-centric atmosphere.

I think that our backcourt matches up with just about any in the country. I think the advances and effectiveness of our frontcourt will have a lot to do with our success this year. I've heard good things about Luke and, as I've mentioned before, he didn't have the benefit of a healthy summer before last year; I think Luke may surprise some. I hope to see Kramer and Robin bulking up a little bit and it looks like Jasonn has slimmed down even more. If our bigs can step up and become producers and threats, we will have a very good year, I think.

I think that beating Gonzaga on the road will be one of the greatest challenges we face this year.

Tidbits From GU Board Empty Re: Tidbits From GU Board

Post by onetouchfutbol Mon Sep 28, 2009 10:29 am

I think that when I look at the backcourts it's a draw. I think they'll just basically negate each other. Both teams have quick pointguards and shooting guards who are possibly the best scorers on their respective teams. I don't really find just keeping close in the first half a very encouraging sign. We were losing to UW by 3-4 points in recent years before we finally broke through with an upset at home. I see us as being able to potentially split with Gonzaga by winning the home match. As much as we've improved, I'll still be shocked if we beat them on the road. Their record at home is almost as good as Duke's record at home. That's the reality.

In my opinion, we can beat GU at home or on a neutral court in the conference tourney. But, we need to play a perfect game to beat them in Spokane. If anyone help to get the job done though, Rev can...

To consistently beat a team like GU, we will need to add more athleticism and have more players with recruiting scores from 85-95. We need to rob players who would otherwise be quality contributors in the Pac-10 just like they do. Right now, we're just good enough to beat them at home or on the road on occassion. The reality is that we faded at the end of last season, and we need to build up momentum all over again.

I feel the same way about our chances against GU. I think that at home is, without a doubt, our best shot at beating them especially if we can increase the ratio of Pilot fans to GU fans.

From what I've heard about Vegas, it is practically a home game for GU. We need to get more people there.

I plan to be at the games in Spokane (my hometown) and Vegas. I know our chances are slim in Spokane, but I want to be there to cheer on the guys and possibly witness a momentous moment. Very few teams have beat GU in their new gym.

ShipstadPilot11 what are you doing trolling the Zaggette board, lol? Don't u know that is Sacreligious. Oh well I guess you and Pilot Nut can have a hometown pass on it.

I know one thing is they once again believe their going to the final four, go undefeated in WCC play, beyond that nothing else exists...in their feeble minds. Their going to get their lunch handed to them many times this year by BCS schools, yet their already dismissing last years "very talented" squad. Reading too much of their fairie tales and they believe their little "hothead" PG is the next All-American, Bouldin will be the player of the year in the country,Sacre will score alot (more than his 3pt average),their freshman could all start on any team in the nation. The only logical ,and rational thought they leave out is Stephen Gray quite possibly could be their best player, and most underated. Bouldin is a know "choker" in big games, one need to look no further than Memphis or North Carolina games last year to realize this truth.

I just hope they think they are so "dominant" over the rest of league. That way when they are not we can all have a good laugh at their expense. Laughing

In my defense, I have a long break at school and I crave any mention of UP basketball I can find. These two things combined = trolling the Bulldog Boards. I thought I would find more about us on their board, but they seem to generally dismiss us as 2 W's on their schedule and don't have much to say about us... I hope they are in for a rude awakening!

We all know one person who should not have been banned. The world's nicest , and polite poster Stonehouse. He could be in total disagreement with your opinion, and you his. Yet, you come out liking young "Stoney" after a debate with him. (He must have had much practice trying to survive growing up in a large Catholic family, or his older siblings taught him his manners, lol) Being a W.A.S.P. I knew I was getting a punch in the face or a "pink belly" the second my parents were out of earshot so I let any coment fly now or then. Plus the fact that I can't afford a therapist now to change those ingrained behaviors that after 46 years good luck trying to change.(Especially if your a youngster under the age of 30 still "wet behind the ears"). I have always wanted to use that phrase Geez, and I finally got to before I passed on.

I digress, I believe PilotNut,Sci-Fi,and RobsJacket do a excellent job of patroling the boards for nutjobs like myself ,who could offend are more politically correct members or those of the fairer sex. Some of whom that have never been in the "real world" or participated in a Sport, and been prevy to the locker room talk of a D-1 mens program.

The reason I mention all of this mumbo jumbo is I don't dare voice my true opinions on any of those board's. First, I am not one of the "in" crowd (which makes your opinion moot on both those ridiculous boards). Although on a positive the Loyola Marymount board lets me "run my yapper" on occasion and has several good members without "how dare u post that on are board attitudes".

In conclusion Angelo, you and Bob Zag should probably let Stonehouse post on your board , but I understand that both of you are intimided by his extensive knowledge of the WCC and its history which neither of you have. (For that matter he probably know's as much history of Gonzaga Basketball and the rest of their athletic programs than both of you put together). Don't think Angelo doesn't faithfully read every post on Pilot Nation or DonsCentral.Hi Angie

Well I guess I've insulted them enough, and the team will just have to give them a nice "as@who@@en" in Jan. My prediction is Ravio scores 25 plus, Smuelders 15, TJ 10-15, Stohl not as much they hawk him with Bouldin and Gray EVERYWHERE he goes. Maybe Kramer will get to welcome Andy Poling or one of their proclaimed 1st team All-American Freshman players to the WCC with a nice "hard" foul (Although I don't endorse that). Realistically I'm thinking Lukes 15 rebound's over Sacre will balance the game out, hopefully Rolling Eyes

Goal Celebration! I think Wally ought to bring that flag inside to the Chiles for the Men and Women's BB games, what does he do at the women's soccer game to fire you guys up??? (I know your "adult beverage's" are probably enough drunken .)

Not me yet, but I always take my "happy" pills and drink my Zag koolaid before I go on there.I think they subconciously (no ,even I'm not that narcisistic, lol)they know that JP Batista is my favorite WCC player of all time too so I get a pass being a Past Zag IdolWorshiper. Plus I want to comment after their first WCC loss Shocked this year, tee hee. Oh, this is going to be a fun season to lurk on their board, they will have "tons" of controversy and arguments this year. I can't wait until they get creamed by Sparty,Duke and the other top 20 schools they play Razz . They will be screaming to have Daye, and maybe Josh H,and Jeremy P,and company were not that bad after all.

Having labored for four miserable years under the oppressive, dictatorial academic regime of Stoney's easily angered older brother, my money is on the latter.

Cool

He wasn't so dictatorial when I had him as a teacher...but then again he was quite green when he "taught" men. So I guess, you are welcome for turning him from a trusting, student's teacher to a miserable, oppressive dictator.

My freshman year in college, La Salle played a football game at Cascade High School, about ten minutes south of Salem, where I go to school. My friend Michael (another LSHS alumnus) and I decide to go. The first person we see? K-Ditty. Conversation transcript follows:

Me: Kuff! Good to see you! How's it going?
(We shake hands.)
K-Ditty: Hey Tim, it's great to see you to.
Michael: What's up Kuffner?
(They shake hands.)
K-Ditty: Good to see you too . . .
(Long pause)
K-Ditty: Nick . . . Shushkov?
(Long pause)
K-Ditty: That's not your name, is it?
Michael: That's not my name.
K-Ditty: Uhh . . .
Michael: Michael -
K-Ditty: Michael Miller!
Michael: That's right.

Two weeks later was the LSHS homecoming, which Michael and I also attended. Who else to should we see as we walk in the gate but the Kuff-man himself. He came straight up to Michael and stuck out his hand.

K-Ditty: Michael Miller, good to see you!
Michael: My name's Nick Shushkov.
K-Ditty: No, no it's not.
Michael: YOU DON'T KNOW THAT.
