Other Games of Interest Empty Other Games of Interest

Post by UPSoccerFanatic Thu Sep 10, 2009 7:28 pm

I thought I'd start this thread as a catch-all for other games we might be interested in as the season progresses, rather than there having to be separate threads by dates for these games. If someone prefers using separate date threads, just say so and we can revert to that.

For today's games (9/10):

The big one: University of Central Florida 1, Florida State 0 (2OT). This is not a game in which the losing team way outplayed the other team. The stats were relatively even, with FSU having a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. I have no idea how good the SOGs were. This game is of interest because FSU was beginning to look like it might be one of the four #1 seeds for the tournament.

Washington State 2, BYU 1. Based on the stats, this was a good game, but WSU definitely had the better of the play. I think this was a very big game for WSU, especially after their losses to Colorado College and Florida State.

A couple of other games this week:

BYU 2, Oklahoma State 1 on Monday 9/7. This adds to the lustre of WSU's win over BYU.

Utah 2, Princeton 0 on Wednesday 9/9.

UCSB 2, William & Mary 0 on Wednesday 9/9.

Thanks for the kinds words, I think it was the combination of our weak cream puff early schedule catching up with us and also UCFs veteran front line against our new back 4. What I cant understand is how we limit PSU and WSU, both of whom have far superior attacking players, to 2 total goals and only 6 sogs and tonight as you pointed out we allow 6 sogs in one game.

From the FSU website. Coach Krikorian was very gracious in his comments regarding the UCF loss:
Credit to UCF. They came in, had a great game plan and were very organized. They were disciplined in their defending and limited our chances. I would say it was a fair result for the game. I was disappointed that we didn't do the things we needed to do to win the game but realistic enough to know that if you don't play your best that you're not going to win.

That makes two losses for Notre Dame already, both by shutouts, and they face Stanford tomorrow.

Notre Dame v. Stanford seems like a win-win for us in terms of maximizing our chances of a #1 seed.

Unc beat TAMU 2-0 today. both UNC score were in the last 10 minutes, so I think they struggled, especially in the first half.

Next week should be very interesting in terms of gauging how good we are. it's the first common opponent comparison we will get.
