In addition to being on TopDrawer's team of the week, Sophie schmidt was named the WCC player of the week for her four goal outburst in Sunday's game against Columbia.

here's the WCC blurb:

Schmidt became the 13th player in school history to score four goals in a game as the No. 3 ranked University of Portland routed Columbia University by a 5-1 margin at the Husky/Nike Invitational. Schmidt entered the contest with two goals scored on the season and now has 27 career goals despite moving to the forward position for the first time in her competitive soccer playing career midway through her freshman season.

The games this year really point out how many scoring options the Pilots have. Opponents are going to have a hard time shutting them down, whether is it Eli, Danielle, Sophie, or Michelle. Stop one or two and there are more to take up the slack. I think we will see more scoring from Kendra as the season goes on... Am looking forward to this Friday's match already!!!

From the Soccer America website.

Soccer America Women's Team of the Week"

Tuesday, Sep 8, 2009 7:00 AM ET
[COLLEGE] For the second week in a row, a Portland player is the Soccer America Women's Player of the Week. After Danielle Foxhoven, Canadian Sophie Schmidt took top honors for games played Aug. 31-Sept. 6 thanks to her four goals in the No. 3 Pilots' 5-1 win over Columbia.
For the Soccer America Women's Team of the Week ...

GOALKEEPERS
Grace Barnard (William & Mary), Jr.
Registered first career shutout in 1-0 overtime win at ranked BYU and then held off Utah barrage to lead Tribe to 2-1 victory.
Mollie Patton (South Carolina), Jr.
Had 11 saves in wins over Louisville (3-0) and Cincinnati (4-0) to extend scoreless streak to 360 minutes to start season.

DEFENDERS
Whitney Engen (North Carolina), Sr.
Anchored backline that shut out Notre Dame (6-0) and Marquette (1-0) at Inn at St. Mary's Classic.
Marie Yempuku (UAB), Jr.
Playing in hometown of Honolulu, had winning goal in 2-1 win over Pacific and helped shut out host Hawaii, 2-0, at the Outrigger Hotel & Resorts Classic.

MIDFIELDERS
Monica Dolinsky (Kansas), Sr.
Had a goal and an assist in each of Jayhawks' 3-1 wins over Long Beach State and Rhode Island.
Jamie Pollock (Georgia), Soph.
Scored two goals in 3-0 win over Florida Atlantic for Bulldogs, winners of Georgia Nike Invitational.

FORWARDS
Devon Beach (Indiana), Soph.
Canadian led Hoosiers past ranked Florida (2-1) with opening goal and assist on teammate Leigh Anne Cummings' game-winner.
Vicki DiMartino (Boston College), Fr.
Scored four goals and added assist in wins over Boston University (2-0), Brown (5-0) and Holy Cross (4-0).
Jessica Price (Florida State), Soph.
Assisted on first goal in 2-1 victory over Penn State and then had two goals and assist in 4-1 victory over Washington State.
Sophie Schmidt (Portland), Jr.
Canadian scored four goals in 5-1 win over Columbia that gave Pilots Husky/Nike Invitational title.

Jen Stoltenberg (Oregon), Jr.
Scored pair of unassisted goals in 2-1 victory at ranked Colorado.

Now the team of the week's coach has decided to use 2 keepers and use a 2-2-5 in front of them.

Smart move, with only 2 mids and 2 defenders, he'll need them both.

Congrats Sophie!

From the UP:

Schmidt Earns National Player of the Week Honors

University of Portland junior forward Sophie Schmidt was named the Soccer America National Player of the Week on Tuesday after scoring four goals in the Pilots’ 5-1 win over Columbia on Sunday. Schmidt earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week and TopDrawerSoccer.com national team of the week honors as well.

Portland improved to 5-0-0 on the season after claiming the Husky/Nike Invitational title with victories over then-No. 23 Colorado College (2-0) and Columbia. Schmidt became the 13th player in school history to score at least four goals in a game in Portland’s win against Columbia.

She entered the contest with two goals scored on the season and now has 27 career goals despite moving to the forward position for the first time in her competitive soccer playing career midway through her freshman season. Schmidt is four goals away from cracking Portland’s career top 10 list and has 70 points in 40 games, the seventh best points per game average in UP history.

Schmidt leads the Pilots early this season with six goals and 14 points. Last year, the Abbotsford, B.C. native led the WCC in scoring during league games with 21 points (9g, 3a) in seven matches.

Portland looks to extend its season-opening winning streak this weekend as host of the Nike Portland Invitational at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Participating teams include Illinois, Miami (FL) and Washington. The tournament begins Friday at 4:30 with Washington vs. Miami, followed by the Pilots and Fighting Illini at 7 p.m. Sunday’s doubleheader starts at noon and the tournament concludes with Portland vs. Miami at 2:30 p.m.
