Wow... this is some great national press. Like for reals... I'm very impressed.

PILOTS LAND BACK HOME FROM DOWN UNDER

For Portland coach Eric Reveno, the timing was ideal for an overseas trip. The Pilots returned virtually everyone of note from a group that won 19 games last season.

Reveno recently returned from the 10-day jaunt to Australia – one in which Portland won three of its four games.

Reveno, as many of the coaches maintain when going overseas, said the 10 practices prior to the trip may have been as important as the trip itself.

Reveno and his staff focused on individual instruction each morning, lifted in the afternoon and practiced at night.

``One of my goals was not to do any of the drills we did in the regular season,” Reveno said.

Reveno said the motto of the trip was to let the kids figure things out. In fact, he called just two total timeouts in the four games.

``We didn’t run many sets,” Reveno said. ``We tried to play out of transition.”

Reveno also said while it’s not on the same level, he was on the staff at Stanford when the Cardinal went to the Final Four in 1998. That team also returned just about everyone.

``Looking back, I don’t think we challenged them enough and made things interesting,” Reveno said.

The strength of the Pilots, once again, will be on the perimeter with the backcourt trio of Nik Raivio (16 ppg), Jared Stohl (11.2) and T.J. Campbell (11.1).

Reveno is hoping that Campbell, who set a school record a year ago in three-point field goal percentage, needs to be more aggressive offensively – even if it results in missing more shots.

He also said that reserve big man Luke Sikma, the son of former NBA star Jack Sikma, has made strides. He wasn’t able to play last summer due to injury and this offseason should help significantly.

Amazing he only called two timeouts the whole time... and I love hearing that they want TJ to be more aggressive and that Luke is making strides. This off-sesaon has to be about getting better... we know we'll be good because we return everyone, but I am interested in seeing what this team's true celing is.

Yeah, next year will be when Rev really earns his paycheck in my opinion. We'll be picked to finish in the top 3, and some might speculate a 20 win season. But, with that opening tourney, our strength of schedule will be higher than last year. So, even if we have a worse record, we might end up with a higher RPI by the end of the season.

I like the sound of a more aggressive TJ on the offensive end. I definitely see some potential for that. I don't think Raivio has reached his ceiling yet either. I'd like to see Rev just give him the green light next year if his EFF rating is off the chart again and see if he can go off on a team or two.

Well, it's tough to say if our RPI will be stronger or not because we haven't seen the whole schedule, but I think we can count on LMU and Pepperdine both being stronger and hopefully not in the 300s in RPI. If all the WCC teams can get into the 100s, that would help a TON... the year that the WCC finished 7th overall in conference RPI ('04-'05 I think) was due in large part to the strong depth - every team was in the 100s at least, and I think the lowest was only in the 160s-170s.

I don't expect that to happen again next year, but I do think that LMU, PEP, and USF will all be better and I don't expect SMC and SCU to drop off too much, even with the losses of Mills, Simpson, and Bryant. USD is the big question mark for me... who knows when/if Brandon Johnson will be ready to go (Achilles tears usually take a full year) and they really don't have much talent around him. Without BJ, they could be pretty bad... I'm talking 7th/8th in the WCC bad.
