what the what!
Surprised no one's latched on to this yet...or maybe I'm just the only one on Twitter.
@CoachReveno: Just granted John Hegarty his release to transfer. Not good to lose a 7 footer with his potential. But he needs to figure some things out.

Re: what the what!
Wow.
I was just at practice on Tuesday and he was playing well.
Considering his background and the fact that he missed the first semester this past season I can't say I'm totally shocked, but I am definitely surprised. I mean... right before the Australia trip?
Oh well... best of luck to Hegarty and I hope he can indeed figure some things out.
So now the question becomes... do we sign someone for next season? There could possibly be some guys still available. Or do we sit on that scholarship? Last season, we signed Campbell in mid-April and Hegarty in May. So I assume there are still some players out there to be had.

Re: what the what!
Definitely not the news I was hoping to pull up when I awoke from my swine flu induced coma today (OK so maybe it isn't that, but I feel like crap...) So unfortunate to see a guy with so much talent leave too soon... and to leave one of the better big men coaches in Rev at that.
I think John was poised to make a big breakthrough this season, but honestly the unfortunate news doesn't really surprise me that much. Watching John at the end of the season you could tell through his body language that he wasn't entirely as enthusiastic as you would hope, and given last fall it doesn't shock me that he would potentially want to leave and pursue a different option closer to home. It would have been great to see him use his size and soft touch to punish the WCC in the coming years but c'est la vie...
Now another question comes up, do we fill in that roster spot NOW with a JC type player (I could see them as the only one's truly available at this point)?? Do we follow a similar path and gamble on a player like John who has sifted through the big schools fingers?? Or do we just stand pat and bring in yet another player the following year?? (BTW with 5 players the class in 2010 is going to be huge literally and figuratively..)

Re: what the what!
Yeah, not a total shock, but unfortunate. He seemed to be the type of player we really needed down low. I wish Hegarty the best and hope that something works out for him... he was a long way from home.
We have so many seniors next year that I wouldn't mind seeing us sign someone this year if there are still any good options out there...

BLEEP! That's not cool. Oh well, if he doesn't want to be a Pilot that's a shame. Does anyone have any Patron?

Glass is always half full. For alot of you guys its with your favorite brew.
I'm somewhat excited about the calamity, but you guys know how I like drauma.
I believe this will shake the rest of the guys up, in a good way.
If theres one guy I trust at this point it's Coach REV. He had to make some pretty difficult but savy decision's last year.
Whoo wee I'm already jacked up for the trip down under..........

Good luck John Hegarty

Club Tourney's in Vegas(#1 in nation) and California this summer.
Who's available locally that Rev would even offer this year?

Re: what the what!
I have no idea who is available. Sikma's Bellevue team mate, Alex Schremph, is walking on at UCLA:

Re: what the what!
That is unfortunate. I am sure Reveno has done some kind of scouting and kept in contact with players who are available for next winter...hopefully some of them are still available.
I would love to see us go the JC route again. With the age of our roster I think THIS may be the year, and possibly our best chance to make a run at the WCC title and an NCAA appearance. Look at the impact TJ made last year compared to Waterford. I know that it could hurt is a couple years from now (or maybe more appropriately, not help as much) by leaving us a very young roster. But if we can make an NCAA appearance that could only help in recruiting, right?

Here's the official release. Short and sweet. No details.:
PORTLAND, Ore. --- University of Portland center John Hegarty has requested and been granted a release to transfer from the Pilots men's basketball team, head coach Eric Reveno announced on Friday. Hegarty (New Bedford, Mass.) appeared in seven games off the bench as a true freshman last season, averaging 2.9 points and 1.0 rebounds per game.
The Pilots finished the 2008-09 season with a 19-13 record and placed third in the West Coast Conference despite having no seniors on the roster. The team, including all 12 remaining players, will travel to Australia on Saturday for a 10-day foreign tour with four games against elite competition scheduled.
