Commissioner's Cup Empty Commissioner's Cup

Post by Stonehouse Sat Feb 14, 2009 1:43 pm

These are the current commissioner's cup standings:

Portland28.0
San Francisco 27.0
Loyola Marymount 26.5
San Diego26.5
Santa Clara 20.5
Gonzaga 18.0
Pepperdine 16.5

Now, if the current WCC standings hold (a big if, I know), this is what it will look like:

Portland42.0
San Diego34.5
Loyola Marymount34.0
Gonzaga34.0
San Francisco30.5
Santa Clara26.0
Pepperdine24.5

Not too shabby, huh? Smile

Is that the standings for both men's and women's? And I know tennis is going on right now, is that including tennis too?

How could I doubt you, Stonehouse, I'm sure you included everything.

Yes it's men's and women's, but I can't include tennis because the way they assign the points is based on how the teams do at the WCC Championship. There isn't a conferences schedule in the WCC for tennis. Word.

They award it in May, don't they? There's enough time left for a friendly wager between Athletic Directors...

We could send USF, USD, or LMU a nice care package of stuff if we lose containing:

1) One pair of John Hegarty's extra large tennis shoes...
2) One pair of super short shorts from the cross-country team...
3) A soccer ball signed by the Rapinoe sisters...
4) A gift certificate to a McMenamin's pub...
5) A photo shot of a unanymous professors' purple varicose veins...
6) Write in your joke gift here...

Give me Beer!

Geez, your wish is my command... this time with SMC. Smile

One thing I wasn't sure about... do they award the points based on the tie-breakers for seeding, or do they give half points if the records are the same? I opted for the former... not sure if that's correct or not.

Commissioner's Cup Empty Re: Commissioner's Cup

Post by DaTruRochin Sat Mar 07, 2009 5:55 pm

I looked through the WCC site, it only had releases back through the 2002-03 seasons plus it said Pepperdine won it in 2001-02 (which for some reason I think was the first year they ever did it), and UP doesn't appear to have ever won it. UP is already at a handicap without having any sort of crew team, and the lack of recent successful spring programs. Also the fact that the WCC doesn't count Track & Field as an official WCC sport doesn't help our cause either seeing that our XC teams are absolutely dominant.

Yeah, XC, soccer, and this year basketball really carry us pretty well. Aren't we expecting the tennis team to finish pretty well though? I personally have no idea; I haven't kept up on UP tennis...

Commissioner's Cup Empty Updated Commish Cup Standings

Post by PilotNut Fri Mar 27, 2009 2:31 pm

The WCC has updated the post-hoops season Commissioner's Cup standings, and the Pilots remain in 1st place!! cheers

(Sorry for the mis-alignment of the tables below; i'm lazy and dont want to create 5 tables...)

West Coast Conference Announces Commissioner’s Cup Standings

San Bruno, Calif. - With the men’s and women’s basketball regular seasons in the books, the West Coast Conference announces the second update of the WCC Commissioner’s Cup standings. The Commissioner’s Cup is an all-sports award presented at the end of each academic year to the league’s top performing school in conference play. A Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Award, recognizing athletic achievement within each gender, will also be presented.

The recipient of the Commissioner’s Cup is based on a point system, reflecting the place finish of each team in conference play. The Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Awards are given to the schools that accumulate the most points within each particular gender sport. The institution with the highest point total after combining the men’s and women’s point totals will be honored with the Commissioner’s Cup. San Diego was the recipient of the Commissioner’s Cup trophy last year.

With conclusion of the basketball season, Portland remains in first place after finishing second on the women’s side and third on the men’s. San Diego moved up to second place in the overall standings with a fourth place finish on the women’s side and a fifth place showing in the men’s standings. Gonzaga has jumped into third place after taking home both the men’s and women’s regular season titles.

As a league, the WCC’s winter season was highlighted by placing five teams in the basketball postseason. For Gonzaga, both the men’s and the women’s teams earned automatic berths into the NCAA tournament by winning the WCC Tournament Title in Las Vegas. The Saint Mary’s men participated in their first-ever NIT, while the Portland women competed in the WNIT for the first time in 10 years. The Portland men played in the postseason for the first time since 1996 by participating in the first annual Collegeinsider.com tournament.

Just adding in baseball, if San Diego wins the conference and we finish in our usual spot, they would be up by .5 point.

Well crud... San Diego took the lead after the golf and tennis championships:

http://wccsports.cstv.com/genrel/042009aab.html

Here are the current standings:

San Diego - 53.0
Portland - 51.0
San Francisco - 50.0
Pepperdine - 47.0
Loyola Marymount - 45.5
Gonzaga - 40.5
Saint Mary's - 39.0
Santa Clara - 33.0

Looks like it will be tough for us to win, but a top three finish is a good possibility.

Over on one of the Division III message boards I visit, they've introduced the concept of sarcasm tags. Frankly, I love the idea. Rochin54's statement then would have read like this:
