Angie scores!

Post by PurpleGeezer on Wed Mar 04, 2009 11:43 am

Angie Woznuk scored for the US WNT as the coasted to a 2-0 win over Denmark in the Algarve cup.
Tina DiMarino scored the second goal. Megan came in for Angie in the 62nd. It looks like the Youth movement is on track.

And Megan got in the score book with a caution in the 85th... My guess is Denmark got chippy and Megan became an enforcer.

Angie got a caution as well, I see. Statement making?

In case you have not seen it - there is a nice writeup about Meghan and her rehab on the USA soccer site.

Thanks!

Love the writup on the WNT blog.

If you are a coach, you have to love young players scoring big goals in a big game, especially as they had combined for a grand total of 7 caps and 1 goal coming into the match. That's what happened today as Angie Woznuk and Tina DiMartino, incredibly skillful players not previously known as "mudders" scored in the rain in Lagos, Portugal, their second and first-ever goals respectively. Woznuk's half-volley from a near impossible angle was, dare we say, "Hamm-like" and she topped if off with her trademark airplane celebration. Give DiMartino credit for an opportunistic goal as the USA's smallest player was first to the rebound of a Natasha Kai header against the towering Danes.

I'm not so sure about Angie not being a Mudder, though. Where do they think she went to school?

Can't wait for the highlight video.

Nice article about Megan. But the absence of any mention of her sister conspicuously given Rachael's parallel medical history and role as a teammate and companion.

Speaking of Rachel, have they filled the absence left by Lauren, I could see Rachel being a good fit on the staff. She exemplifies the type of person this program needs.

The longtime press officer for this team is not really the sharpest guy. He also isn't a fan of Portland, and since Angie is from San Diego like he is, he'd rather claim that. Conversely, DiMartino is from New York, which isn't exactly Southern California, so she's had experience playing in the rain as well. Bizarre.

The USA Press guy is really really not up for the job. I wonder why they continue with him.

I think Angie's experience in playing in slick conditions certainly paid off. Why am I not surprised to hear DiMartino beat a bigger player to the ball?

As far as the yellow cards. I think it is reflective that the referee's overseas call more fouls than their NCAA Division I counterparts. Maybe they just had the card out trying to find Abby in the crowd?

I love it when the petite players score the big goals. When Amazon woman Abby Wambach comes back, I wonder how the lineup will change.

Geezer's higlight wish is granted. In addition to the U.S.-Denmark video with interview clips of Angie, the Studio 90 section of the US Soccer site has posted a hilarious Heather O'Reilly tour of sunny southern Portugal. (Yeah, I know she's a Tarheel, but she has personality.) Looks like the US women took care of Iceland 1-0 with Angie and Megan starting and Megan playing the full 90.
