I noticed their five starters averaged 36 minutes against us. Wonder if that took something out of them?

I'm sure it did. Even the Zag guy behind me at the UP game mentioned that they were going to pay for their effort Thursday, and they did.up7587 wrote:I noticed their five starters averaged 36 minutes against us. Wonder if that took something out of them?
Ya know, I've been mulling over the whole thing about the Zag fans over the years. While I have certainly experienced some of the bad things UP fans (including me) have said about them over the years, Thursday I didn't see that. I sat near or talked to several guys with Gonzaga shirts Thursday, and they all enjoyed everything about that game that I did. They reveled in the competition and the effort that same as I did, and they recognized that UP has made a big step up. Though we were on opposite sides, we really had pretty similar experiences from the game. From my perspective, there was nothing but positives from that game.
Maybe the fact that Adam wasn't there softened me a bit against SATAN.

Yes, In retrospect I agree that the Portland game took much out of them. If you look at who did actually have some energy for our lovely neighbors to the north it was their backup player's. The thing that is embarrassing about them this year is when they get down or run into a team with similar talent---they have absolutely NO LEADER. For example...last night,PSU,half the game against St Mary's or the Pilot's. Their team while super-talented, has absolutely no heart or a player who leads them. Pargo, Heyfelt I've given up on those guy's. I'm not sure Pargo will even get drafted
.
Bouldin dissapeared, where was he out selling popcorn in the Lobby?
I hate to put a hex on the Pilot's, but I believe with their conditioning program I think they would have made a better showing with less talent.
Will the real Gonzaga please stand up? Wow, do those knuckhead's sure miss Pendo's glue.
SO MUCH FOR MY POSITIVE TALK ON THIS THREAD,EH???

Gonzaga put out a real apathetic effort, however, the defense of Memphis is the real deal. Like the announcer said, they are 13-0 since their coach made Tareke their pointguard. We might have put in a better showing, but, with the same end result.
Watching the Portland vs. Gonzaga game, I still can't help but wonder if Hegarty would have helped our cause. Even if he does not completely know the system yet, it would seem like he could have helped to overcome some of the size advantage that we had down low with Daye and Heyvfelt. Those two turned us into an outside shooting team. I'd like to see Hegarty develop some chemistry with T.J. before Campbell graduates, and it would be great if Rev could recruit a shot blocking specialist too.
Overall though, I think Rev deserves WCC Coach of the Year, and really, who am I to critique what he's done? It feels good to think that in the coming years, we can start to become "spoiled" fans who expect excellence from the program...while still remembering that these guys are student athletes.

HAHA. Yeah, then we can be like the Duck "fans" that think Bellotti should be pushed out because he isn't winning it all. Where were they when more than three wins was a good season. Those SMC fans saying Bennett should be fired because they are struggling without the best player in the league are nuts. One bad stretch, and now a coach can get tossed. Ernie Kent loses four seniors and struggles with a young team, and the knives are out for a coach who has gotten to the final eight twice. Schools should be loyal to coaches through tough stretches. OF course, coaches should be loyal to schools when they succeed and are the next "hot commodity". It will be interesting to see how we develop in two years when our current crop of juniors are gone.

All Bellotti did the last two seasons was end up ranked after losing his first and second-choice QBs.
Speaking of perspective, Canzano had a column today about how OSU is not playing an attractive style of ball right now. He also acknowledges that's about the only way they can play if they want to be competitive, the team is rebuilding, and Robinson is the guy to take them where they want to be.
I see some parallels between their situation and what happened when Rev first came. Change the names and I think you'll see it:
We all saw Rev's first few years were a struggle. There were some signs of improvement but there were also plenty of tough games to watch. Now look where we are after giving Rev a few years.

Athletic director Bob De Carolis was walking around the arena after the game. De Carolis hired the right coach. Even in a loss you could see it. But it's going to take a year of slow play, and near misses, before anyone really recognizes how right he got this one.

I was rooting hard for GU - but man that was poor effort. You can just see the frustration on Few's face with respect to how (not) hard his team plays. And Daye with the lackadaisical pouting that he does. Seriously! Get fired up out there! That was a bit of a frustrating loss, because they were representing the WCC out there (and thus, by association, the caliber of team we have). On gameday in the morning (in spokane), Few mentioned that they played a real good team last Thursday, and I can't remember which announcer it was, but he piped up and said yea, you guys played a good portland squad. The most frustrating part is that they looked like a different team from thursday, and I don't think it was purely a result of the competition.
