Rob Chavez Sighting Empty Rob Chavez Sighting

Post by Stonehouse Tue Jan 13, 2009 3:09 pm

Was at the UP/GU women's basketball game this weekend and saw Rob Chavez there. Kelly Graves (the GU coach) used to be an assistant at UP when Chavez coached on the Bluff, and I assume he came to the game to see Kelly since they were talking afterward. I can't ever remember seeing him in the Chiles Center... I wonder if it was the first time he'd been back? I know that there was some bad blood when he was let go.

Anyway, I had mixed feelings seeing him. Obviously I am wistful for the days when we had 20+ wins, made back-to-back WCC finals appearances and went to the NCAA tournament, but I also am so frustrated when I think about what happened after that awesome start to his career here. Just think... if we could have landed just a few the Oregon/SW Washington kids that Gonzaga did during that time... Santangelo, Frahm, Dickau, Stepp... sigh...

Holy crap! The owner of my jacket!!

My impression of Chavez was always that he's a pretty solid game coach but an awful recruiter. When he had Steele's players to work with . . . boy, were we good!

For those of you who are new around here, before Adam Morrison . . . there was Matt Santangelo - bane of my grade school existence. Hitting my head agai

Rob Chavez Sighting Empty Jim Shaw -- Finally!! he's a head coach

Post by DoubleDipper Mon Apr 27, 2015 10:20 am

When Rob Chavez was the UP head coach he had some wonderful guys as assistants.....one of those guys was Jim Shaw.

It would seem Jim has been a D1 assistant coach forever (actually 25 years), including stops at UP, St. Louis, Oklahoma, OSU, UW, and most recently at St. Mary's. But now Jim is the HEAD COACH at his alma-mater, Western Oregon!

Jim is one of the really good guys of the coaching ranks, a guy I consider a friend....good to see he's settling down back in Oregon where he'll get an opportunity to be the guy calling the shots at WOU.
