When is the signing period for soccer over for the upcoming school year? Are there any top players that have not committed to any school that have Portland on their short list?

The signing period for soccer Starts February 4, 2009 and ends August 1, 2009.

http://tinyurl.com/Nationalletter-org

I think we already know who the UP players who will sign are for UP for the 2009 class.

UP is currently working on the 2010 class.

I suppose some player might change their mind, but I can't think of any uncommitted ones for 2009 that have listed UP, but last year Emma Nelson came out of nowhere in June.

(Emma actually came out of Mill Creek, WA Signing period... 620251)

The big names I'm watching are Ohai, Eddy and Bennet for the 2010 class. Which school will they commit to? I'm hoping UP is tops on their list.

I'm still trying to learn as much about Elizabeth Eddy as I can. Eddy was a member of the U17 WC team...a teammate of Cloee. As was Kate Bennet. Someone first mentioned Eddy as a possible recruit...here in PN.

Bio-Shorts from USSoccer.com

CLOEE COLOHAN (THE HAMMER)
West Point, Utah – Black Diamond SC
The USA’s leader in the back, she is a very composed defender who is talented at defusing dangerous opportunities for the opponents. She started all five matches at the CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Qualifying tournament and rarely leaves the field for the U.S. She has excellent size and is a strong tackler.

KATE BENNETT
Clyde Hill, Wash. – Crossfire Premier
The midfield workhorse is an excellent passer, two-footed and has no problem doing the dirty work to get her teammates into scoring positions. She adds depth to the USA’s center-midfield positions.

ELIZABETH EDDY
Costa Mesa, Calif. – SC Blues
The relentless worker on the flanks made a late run to make the final World Cup roster. One of four players on the final squad who did not participate in CONCACAF Qualifying, her creativity in scoring and passing from the flank midfield adds depth to the U.S. attack.

Here are some another articles on Eddy. Most interesting to me was that she was on a National Championship Blues team and the description of her as a player. Sounds like a good fit for the way the Pilots play soccer. She says she is also looking at UCLA, USC, Notre Dame and Stanford.

Depending on how important surfing is to her I think the most likely place for her might be UCLA (close to beach). If she gets less than a great offer from UCLA maybe we can get her. I doubt she would be attracted to Notre Dame soccer, or USC for that matter. If she has the grades, could be a good find for Stanford. Non-surfing schools are Stanford, Portland, and Notre Dame. Portland does have water but its the fresh water kind and the biggest wave you find might be the wake from a ship.

I doubt she would consider Notre Dame, but you never know. Carrie Dew (Encinitas, CA) went there and she is as "surfer chick" as you can find.

Here is another one with pics of her in action at the U-17 world cup.

http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/statisticsandrecords/players/player=301285/index.html

Still more from this kid. She played pointyball with boys. Wonder if she is tough?

Hold onto your hat read this. She is faith based and has learned her soccer from Tad Bobeck of the Blues. Point for Portland over the other schools.

She also sees the field well and is patient. On the game winner, she passed up her shot, waited, and then set up a teammate with a closer shot.

Thanks AP! That's good stuff on Eddy. I like her patience...sounds llike a good fit and very Pilot-like! A PN member had posted a conversation with one of Elizabeth's relatives....something about how amazed they were with... how large the crowd was and how much support and enthusiasm there was...even during a "downpour"!! Yah...that's an accurate description of Pilot Soccer fans...we're nuts! bounce

Now...if we can just get the crowd to do a good Wave around Merlo...she might just feel like she belongs....dude? Laughing

I played against Eddy in high school soccer when I was a senior and she was a freshy at her old hs, Calvary Chapel. They were in our league so we played them three times. Every time we played them she carried their team and really carried herself well. Had beautiful ball handling and ran the middle well. She's fast and tough. Fantastic to see another one of us Costa Mesans considering Portland.

That last article was very revealing. I liked how she understands that her athletic abilities is what is keeping her competitive at HS and Club....and that she needs to work on developing her soccer skills. Sounds very much like Keelin! Once she elevates her soccer skills to synch with her athlethicism...oh boy...that's scary...Elizabeth sounds like she will be a dominating force in college. I hope she's on our side!

Don't assume that if she's a Surfer her only choice is Southern California.

Here's some folks surfing Oregon's Nelscott Reef.

Geez, I'm not a surfer, but I understand there's a big difference surfing the fifty degree Oregon coast waves versus SoCal! lol!

Well, It's not as big a difference as you might think. California is fed by the same currents we are. Today, in the middle of a snowstorm in Portland, the water temperature around Neslcott Reef is reported at 49.8º by Noah offshore buoys and is 57º at Longbeach and 58.3º off La Jolla. That's only 8.5º.
Summer differentials are similar.

NODC coastal water temperature guide

You are going to need wetsuits (or drysuits) either way. The only question is how thick. Neither is Hawaii.

<edit> I was watching "Stormwatch 2008" on the tube. There are guys surfing on the coast today. I'm guessing that was on a bet or just to get on TV.

Nice vids Geez thanks. I love watching big wave surfing. I am not sure I would ever atempt it in those conditions. The wave runners you see in the backround are there for good reason. Surfer wipe out rescue and tow-in waves.

Its not the kind of break you just roll out of bed every morning to face. Still its radical. I've never seen that kind of wave size on the West Coast. Does it break like that in the summer too or only in winter storms?

It's biggest in fall and early winter. but people go out there in the summer, too. Just don't expect 25 footers.

Nah, That's not radical. When I was a kid I surfed some on Long Island NY's south shore. The surfing sucked by West Coast standards, but we were kids and didn't know any better. The only good part was that the water temperature was 75º because of the Gulf Stream.

The surf is better in the winter. Here's video of guys surfing the South Shore in February. The water temperature is probably around 35º.

THAT'S radical.

35 degrees :face: I never would have been able to hang with that. Something about the Atlantic Ocean just looks angry even in small surf. I guess I would have been the guy on the shore chatting up the local girls while the real surfers were out.

Dream on....

There are no local girls out in February, especially that February 23. Long Island got hit with 10" of snow that day and the temperature dipped into the low 20's, according to Newsday.

you would have been on the beach by yourself and that moviemaker, maybe reciting this poem to yourself.

If I was a soccer coach, I would hang George Graham's (AP's sig. quote) statement in bold lettering on my office wall behind my desk, memorize it and preach it to my players starting with the first speech at the first practice of every season.

I would burn that quote into the brains of all my field players, regardless of position, until it was part of their subconscious thinking.
