Re: Signing period...
Well I am now schooled on the reef break at Nelscott. What some others if you are at liberty to say. In my parts surfers will give you a beat down if you publicize a secret spot.

Ha ha- Oregon isn't populous enough where that's a problem. Besides, I'm old now and don't surf much, so they can't find me. Too many sports, too little time.
Companies are actually trying to publicize the spots to build up a surfing industry. Nelscott is publicized because the tow-in companies are trying to make a living. Sure there are "secret spots" but you can get by on the well known ones, and look up and down the coast. The pacific coast highway is within sight of most of the coast.
About the only place close to Portland I would call crowded is Oswald West on the weekends in the summer. Lots of beginners to smush on your way in.
here's a site that has webcams of some of the beach sites: http://www.oregonsurf.com/html/coastcams.html
You shoul probably limit your viewing to daytime
Here's a listing for North coast spots.
ttp://www.oregonsurf.com/html/surfspots_north.html
and a listing of the central coast.
http://www.oregonsurf.com/html/surfspots_central.html
and the south
http://www.oregonsurf.com/html/surfspots_south.html
Most surfshops have maps and they'll tell you local spots.
Make sure you are aware of the resident hazards, like the Dory boats at Cape Kiwanda, or Great Whites anywhere you see seals (rarely).
But you knew that.

Re: Signing period...
Thanks for all the good reading. I might just get stoked enough to try out Oregon next trip. My last outing at patrick's point while attending Humboldt State did not turn out well. I always assumed it just got more hairy as you went north. Obviously not if you avoid big winter storms. And yes I am always on the lookout for the men in gray suits. Especially after watching forty hours of shark week on the DSC channel.

They do it a bit differently at Cape Kiwanda.
And I have no idea why they are called dorys.

One of those Dory boats claimed the arm of one of our Quiksilver snowboard team riders when he was out surfing the epic Oregon waves. Newport doesn't have the greatest waves compared to some of the other spots in socal. We beat Eddy's team twice and came to a draw the other time. She's a tough chick hope to see her in Portland purple.

Eddy reminds me of another surfer/soccer player. Ashlyn Harris of UNC was thinking of going pro in surfing but decided to focus on soccer. Great athlete but plagued with injuries.

That's an awesome video aleppiek. Nice rides. There seems to be a surfing botherhood behind the scenes here in PilotNation.
Eddy should feel right at home if she decides to play at UP!

Re: Signing period...
I have learned that scholarship athletes must sign a contract with the school that they will not compete in dangerous activities/sports etc., that could injure them for playing. I am not sure which sports are banned, but I am pretty sure skiing, snowboarding and motorcycle riding are out. Surfing I am not sure but is probably included given the amount of feet cuts and head bonks you get from rocks/reefs, your board, the boards of others, not to mention the occasional shark attack.
So I am guessing surfing may not be a factor in any soccer playing decisions for scholarship athletes.

Re: Signing period...
AP, I don't think those are enforceable under NCAA/University bylaws (I need a Geezaldinho ruling) because athletic scholarships can't be conditionally based (only on merit of performance). But some coaches create them on a program-by-program basis, similar to an honor code. The Portland program has had an unwritten rule about refraining from those things, but that never really stopped anyone from going boarding, surfing or skiing or anything else that could tear an ACL, break an ankle or cause other serious injuries.

I can't say for sure because I have never seen any of the actual paperwork. So your word is better than my guess. BTW what does KFTC represent? That is a determined little girl holding that sign.

It certainly isn't enforceable under the national letter of intent program. That's a standard form that is the same for all student athletes. There is no provision for any activity restrictions under that program. You can read the provisions of the National letter of intent at national-letter.org

Re: Signing period...
As I said, it's from what I know and have heard about several programs, it is usually an honor system type of deal to refrain from activities that might cause injury and limit an athlete's participation.
As far as KFTC pertains to my avatar, it stands for Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, and that little girl is holding a sign for a conference of some sort; that picture was given to me to use for my avatar because of that sign. KFTC can also mean Korea Fair Trade Commission, among other things. Neither of those acronyms fit my meaning, though.
