Interesting. Kendall is always trying to get better and sounds as though she has killer instinct.

I like the part where her teammate says Kendall's goal is to start next season for the Pilots. Apparently she doesn't have much use for sitting and watching. (No bad attitude implied here. She is just going to fight like a demon to snare one of those coveted 10 field starting spots.)

The article features her as winning the 6A (big school) State Player of the Year for the second straight year, her junior and senior years. Both seasons her team, Lincoln, was unbeaten and untied state champions.

Boy, there are going to be some fierce battles for the starting 11 spots next August. Kendall is an attacking offensive force. And her goal is to start! And apparently, she has a tremendous work ethic. This is going to be the craziest off-season speculating on line-ups with the quality depth we should have. I've said this before, but I think it bears repeating. I think Pilot Nation is going to have a whole lotta fun trying to speculate on all the possibilities. And when August does finally comes around, it's gonna be real insane!

Spring ball will be interesting, although there probably won't be any incoming freshmen there. But it's always fun seeing who has improved and watching Garrett try his different combinations. Shocked

Joining Kendall on the 6A All-State first team are 2009 recruit Taylor Brooke of West Linn, and 2010 recruit Sarah Bridges of Jesuit.

FANatic you might catch some new recruits at spring ball. I read somewhere that Garret is encouraging participation at the earliest time. I don't know what if any rules apply to the roster for spring but if they are local I would expect to see them at least working out with the team.

I smiled inside when I read that line of the article. This drive is what makes the Pilots so great. Look at who is returning. If your goal is to be as good as, or better, than those players, it's scary how much you'll bring to the team.

I saw Kendall play a couple of times this year and thought that she looked quick, was good with the ball at her feet and had a good vision of the field. I saw her both at center mid and out on the wing, and thought that she looked best when she was on the outside. A friend who was with me at one of the games, who is not even much of a soccer fan, said of Kendall "Wow, that girl is scary good!" That comment pretty much sums up her skills.

You've also got to like Kendall's optimistic attitude about winning a starting spot as a frosh. Hats off to her. This is certainly a stretch goal, though, because of the depth of talent on next year's team.

Nice: 3 of the season's top 10 field players from Oregon's biggest high schools will become Pilots by 2010. I agree that spring and fall will be extra competitive in terms of starting lineup and playing time. We've noted that the back line will be loaded with more proven defenders than can play at once. The same holds true at midfield and striker with the influx of freshman talent and the triumphant return of the U-20 champions. And let's not forget the keepers, because surely Hailee deserves and needs playing time after her redshirt season. The intrasquad scrimmages should be awesome. Versatile, deep, strong, fast = Pilots 2009. Let the speculation continue!

Yes, and there is usually a practice game or two with other schools. They aren't announced, except on here by certain *ahem* "respected elder" posters.

Teams are allowed a lot more than "a couple" of dates in the spring. The team is nominally allowed 5 dates of competition (not games, DATES). In addition to the season and tournament games. That's why you see teams in the spring sometimes play two games in a day.

A member institution shall limit its total playing sched-
ule with outside competition in soccer during the institution’s soccer playing season in any one year to 20 con-
tests during the segment in which the NCAA championship is conducted and five dates of competition during
another segment

In addition, there are additional competitions or dates allowed if they meet certain criteria: (I'll leave the conference championship dates and NCAA tournament dates out of this, they are obvious.)

(c) Alumni game -One soccer contest or date of competition each year against an alumni team of the in-
stitution;
(f) Foreign team in the US -One soccer contest or date of competition each year with a foreign opponent in
the United States;
(g) Alaska or Hawaii - Any soccer games played in Hawaii or Alaska, respectively, against an active Division
I member institution located in Hawaii or Alaska, by a member located outside the area in question
(h) Fundraising activity - Any soccer activities in which student-athletes from more than one of the institu-
tion’s athletics teams participate with and against alumni and friends of the institution, the purpose of
which is to raise funds for the benefit of an institution’s athletics or other programs, provided the student-
athletes do not miss classes as a result of their participation
(i) Celebrity Sports activity -Competition involving a limit of two student-athletes from a member in-
stitution’s soccer team who participate in local celebrity soccer activities conducted for the purpose of
raising funds for charitable organizations, provided:
(1)the student-athletes do not miss classes as a result of the participation;
(2)the involvement of the student-athletes has the approval of the institution’s athletics director; and
(3)the activity takes place within a 30-mile radius of the institution’s main campus.
(j)US National Team -One contest or date of competition played against the U.S. national team as
selected and designated by the appropriate national governing body for soccer (e.g., “Under-21” U.S.
national team).

Once-in-four-years-exemption - An institution may exempt the contests
played on a foreign tour, provided the tour is conducted by the member institution in accordance with the
procedures set forth in Bylaw 30.7
OSU apparently got burned on the foreign team in the US one. they apparently didn't play an approved foreign team and had to drop a game (us) from the schedule during the regular season.

Does anyone ever recall a foreign or Alaska-Hawaii trip?

I don't know why they don't announce most games in the spring. I usually find out at the last minute from a groundskeeper or somebody...

I don't recall a prior AK/HI tour, but I'm thinking that a spring game in Fairbanks might be good preparation for a fall game in South Bend.

One of my favorite post cards of all time is from when my parents lived in Alaska. The post card was entitled "Early Spring in Alaska", and pictured someone all bundled up, standing next to a bank whose thermometer-sign read '-42'. I'm pretty sure the picture was taken in Fairbanks.

And the -42 could be either Celcius or Fahrenheit because the scales are equivalent at minus 40 degrees.

Pappy: You are bringing a fine eye for the weather to Pilot Nation. All those long night watches from the crow's nest are paying off.

The spring "dates" can be fun and instructive. Those that are scrimmages are casual affairs with no tickets, no concessions stands and a small (yet unnaturally well-informed) crowd. It gives a glimpse into what the coaching staff might be thinking about for fall and players get a good chance to show what they can do. Sometimes the spring graduates do play a bit as needed to fill a position. This year the participation of seniors should be small to none, given that only 3 upperclassmen have moved on. By spring we will have had another 3-4 months of speculation about who plays where -- and then we'll have more fresh eyewitness news to ponder.
