Notre Dame's match

Post by Rochin54 on Thu Nov 20, 2008 2:16 pm

So, ND plays tomorrow night at 7:30. Our forecast low for tomorrow night in South Bend is 7 degrees. but it should be alright, because the lake effect snow warning expires at 1pm tomorrow afternoon...plenty of time to clear the field!

Luckily, the opposing team should be used to it...Minnesota santa

I wonder how many fans will brave the elements.

In my experience, the worst place to be in weather like that is an assistant referee. As a center or a player, you can keep moving. As a coach, substitute, or fan, you can bundle up. As an AR, there is one specific place you have to be at any moment and, if play stays in one end for a long time, that place can remain stationary for long periods. Plus, you have to wear shorts! I remember one windy, cold night at Jesuit when I managed to let the wind extend the flag to cover between shorts and socks for a while when I was in the Jesuit defensive end (i.e., standing at the halfway line until they scored again). Good luck to the ladies and gentlemen who get assigned for the ND/Mn match!

Yup, but at least the keeper can wear long pants...

BTW, the NCAA Web site has a video link for the ND/Mn match, so it might be available online. Go to

http://www.ncaa.com/sports/w-soccer/ncaa-w-soccer-body.html

and look for the link in the scrolling scoreboard window in the top right-hand corner.

I can imagine the ball being pretty hard when it's 7 degrees out. Kicking it and getting struck by it has got to be painful!

Not to mention falling or sliding at all on hard ground like that, it makes the even surface of astroturf seem like a pillow

The thought of such wintry conditions make 50 degrees in sideways rain seem downright pleasureable.

Hmm - 6+ inches of snow on the ground this morning, and it's still coming down. We'll probably get another inch or two before it stops this afternoon. It's gonna be a coooold game for dem irish tonight.

I seem to recall we played a playoff game there on a frozen field one year, and in a mudpit another....

One of the years we played there was in '98, the year the Final Four was in Greensboro. That time, the Pilots won in Notre Dame, 2-1. If my memory serves me correctly,Tara Koleski's told us that after the Pilots scored their winning goal and the Pilots' fans stopped cheering, you could have heard a pin drop.
