Re: UP versus Texas
I know people who forgot their guards for games and literally ripped shingles off the snack cut roof and used those... Most refs just have you knock on your shins, and if they hear that hollow sound they let it fly.

I used to wear my ice hockey pads. Never had to worry about mixing it up

One of Clive's mandates was to keep the boots polished and socks pulled up. I know the team boot polishing traditions carries on, much like John Wooden's basketball team sock ceremony.

Sorry to nit-pick on you, but I just couldn't let this one go. In China, the words "martial arts" translate to "kung fu". Kung fu is China's overarching martial art that has many disciplines and forms.

Re: UP versus Texas
On the shin-guard issue:
High-school referees are admonished to check to see if the guards are reasonable and to verify with the coach before the match that "all your players are properly equipped." We are warned in no uncertain terms that we (and the organization we represent) can be legally liable if an improperly equipped player were to be injured and we haven't followed appropriate procedures.
Some high-school players (especially boys) like to wear 2" shin guards just below the knee. They whine if asked to put on legitimate guards (but they always manage to find some).
As for Ms. Moore, I'm guessing that hers fell out sometime during the match.

This is a lot like the procedure when working softball as well. The coaches confirming the players are properly equipped seems pretty standard across NFHS.
Does the whining go something like, "but I played this way the last game/last week/all year and nobody said anything"?

Re: UP versus Texas
Oh yeah! Like every time!
The other one is soccer is securing the mobile goals. They have to have something to keep the goal from flopping over if someone grabs the crossbar. (Not that this should ever happen in a soccer game anyway.) I remember a game at Grant a few years ago where the coach swore that he had never been asked to do this and that we simply couldn't play the game if I insisted on it. But lo and behold, he found a couple of convenient sandbags about 50 years away in the equipment building...
