Lincoln vs. Tualatin Empty Re: Lincoln vs. Tualatin

Had to be true fans (or parents) to watch this one, as it rained the entire time. But this is Portland, and I’m sure there is some other less common name for the precipitation of the particular size & spacing than just plain “rain”.

But it was the same weather for both teams. The game was pretty much all Lincoln. They controlled the ball for most of the game, like a little UP. Kendall Johnson, our frosh-to-be, scored off a free kick from well out, nice curving shot in the upper left corner of the net. Plus she got an assist on a subsequent free kick, and her corner kick led to the final Lincoln goal. Caroline Kruez scored two goals for Lincoln and maneuvered the ball well in the offensive half of the field. Tualatin was not aggressive and never strung a series of passes together to mount an attack.

So the Cardinals will get a shot at their 2nd straight 6A title Saturday when they play Westview.

The Cardinals had a bit more offense and ball control to show tonight than they did last Saturday when they were hounded by Jesuit. The people I was sitting near were commenting at just how good Jesuit is to have shut down Lincoln.

. . . or just how rough Jesuit is, when provided with a tolerant ref, to have shut down Lincoln.

That's how Lincoln vs. Jesuit looked to me, anyway, and I'm still hoping for someone else who saw it to offer their feedback. So, forgive me for copying here what I already posted in another thread, and let's see if we get a corroborating report.

I agree that it was very close and Jesuit was more aggressive while Lincoln had more finesse. Lincoln also seemed quicker to the ball. However, Lincoln (or both teams?) were way off their passing game, and it turned into a pretty ugly kickball match (not at all like the Pilots).

To me it looked like Lincoln's percentage of passes connecting was low because the passer was usually being shoved from behind and the intended recipient was often getting body-slammed or tackled from behind. Four Lincoln players left the field injured. There are rules against these practices, and when my daughter plays in U14 classic soccer those rules are often enforced, but this ref was not enforcing them. Near the end of the game he decided to start asserting some control, so he called (and yellow-carded) some of the dangerous tackles—about equally on both sides, curiously. However, as I remember it he was allergic to awarding a free kick within striking distance of a goal; and I don't recall him ever calling a foul for shoving from behind, which was clearly Jesuit's chosen style of play.

In short, I thought that the ref allowed "physical" play to turn the beautiful game ugly, with plenty of physical injuries and nowhere near enough effective passing. And of course with accurate passing there might have been goals scored, avoiding the shootout, which nobody likes.

My 13-yo daughter believes in "aggressive" play, and gets called for her share of fouls, but she thinks that means aggressively going after the ball, not the player. I'm not sure what to tell her about a game like this.

Yeah, I must have been a "fan" to stand in that last night. I only use an umbrella for when I shoot photos. So half way through the match when I started to get soaked I was puzzled. It turns out it was raining so hard it put a hole in the top of the umbrella. scratch

I say possesion was around 80-20. Kendall Johnson was an absoulute beast in the midfield. She seemed two steps in front of her mark a bunch. Her goal was class. 26 yards out and she placed it into the upper 90 at the far post. Minutes later on another free kick, this time from 22 yards out, she placed a perfect ball to the near post. The final goal came after the keeper could not control the ball which resulted in a nice scramble in front of the goal.

The scoreline could of been more. The Tualatin keeper had some great saves. On one series she made three point blank saves in a two minute span. The Lincoln keeper can not say the same. She was hardly tested all night.

Yeah, thanks for the reports!

Here's some video I found of the game showing interviews of Scifo and Kendall, and three of the goals: http://videos.oregonlive.com/oregonlive/2008/11/lincoln_beats_tualatin_40_for.html

Purple Haze, I like your new avatar! They should hand our "Megan is my Idol" tees to the first 1000 fans at Friday night's game.

As for high school soccer, the Lincoln vs. Westview game should be a good one on Saturday afternoon. It was nice of OSAA to schedule it so that it doesn't interfere with the playoff games at Merlo.

Thanks eFan, for the Lincoln video. Both Michele and Kendall seem so humble and down to earth. I may have to become a Lincoln fan with Michele being their young coach.

And thanks for the video of Kendall. It's the first time I recall ever seeing her play. (And they were all great plays and scores!)

Yeah, I hope being a lefty gives her a little more spin/curve on set pieces so she can make the ball spin downward into the net rather than flying wildly high all the time. (Like we see regularly with not only the Pilots, but most of our opponents, too.)

Also, it's nice to have a lefty in your arsenal for PK's.Lincoln vs. Tualatin Happy-074

Oh a right footed person can do that as well, it just naturally has a different arc from the kick (think a curve like ( instead of a curve like ) if that makes any sense)... Especially useful with corners and whatnot... And imagine a goalie having to deal with a superior lefty and a righty both lining up for a kick 25 yards out.... Not an enviable position
