Portland State tournament chances Empty Portland State tournament chances

Post by Geezaldinho Sat Nov 01, 2008 1:54 am

PSU and SAC State battled to a 0-0 draw in the last regular season game. Had they won the game, they would have won the conference title. Their record in the conference is 4-1-2

The main competition is Weber State, which has a record of 4-2-0 and plays Idaho State Saturday.

the conference win will mean a home seed trough the Big Sky tournament. The automatic NCAA tournament slot goes to the tournament winner.

So- I guess tommorow I'm a Bengal.

According to the Big Sky Conference website, if Weber State wins against Idaho State tomorrow, they will win the Conference regular season with 15 points to PSU's 14. In that case, Weber State will host the Big Sky Tournament. If Weber State ties or loses, then Portland State will win the Conference regular season (I believe they have the tie-break over Weber State). But, it's a little confusing to me because Northern Arizona also has 14 points and, so far as tiebreaks are concerned, they tied Portland State (at PSU). I guess we wait for the Weber State-Idaho State result and then check the Big Sky website if Weber State ties or loses to be sure who hosts the Tournament. Go Bengals!

Here's how the NAU site explains all the scenarios. (this was before any of this weekend's games)

The Lumberjacks have totaled 11 points (three wins and two ties) during league play, only one point behind second place Weber State (7-8-2, 4-2-0 BSC) and two points behind first place Portland State (5-10-3, 4-1-1 BSC). With a victory on Friday against Northern Colorado (7-12-0, 2-4-0 BSC) the Lumberjacks will reach the postseason for the first time since 2005.
.....

The potential scenarios for winning the Big Sky regular season title and hosting the Big Sky Championships will play out as follows. NAU could win the conference title and host the BSC Championships with a win versus Northern Colorado, a Weber State loss or tie to Idaho State (3-11-4, 1-4-1 BSC) and a Portland State loss to Sacramento State (9-8-1, 3-3-0 BSC).

Portland State sits atop the conference standings heading into the last weekend of play. The Vikings have clinched a spot in the postseason and will win the conference title outright and host the BSC Championships with a win versus Sacramento State or a Weber State tie or loss to Idaho State.

Weber State will take the conference title outright and host the BSC Championships with a win versus Idaho State and a Portland State loss to or tie to Sacramento State. The Wildcats can tie Idaho State and still host if Portland State loses to Sacramento State, since Weber State holds the head-to-head tie-break over the Vikings.

so- Still "Go Bengals"

And from the PSU site after last night's game:

With Friday’s match, the Hornets (9-8-2, 3-3-1 Big Sky) will not qualify for this year’s conference tournament. The Vikings (5-10-4, 4-1-2 Big Sky) will have to wait for the outcome of tomorrow’s Weber State and Idaho State match to see whether or not they will host the tournament and who they will be playing.

“They’re competitive- they want to win outright,” Head Coach Laura Schott said of the team after Friday’s match. “But they are still in it and they can still go to the NCAA tournament, and that’s the next focus.”

PSU’s victory over the Bengals last Saturday secured a spot in the post-season for the second-consecutive year, and the Vikings will be seeded no lower than second in the Big Sky Tournament. A loss by the Wildcats tomorrow will mean that Portland State will host the tournament, and the Vikings will be named Big Sky Conference Regular Season Co-Champions along with Northern Arizona.

The 2008 conference tournament will take place Nov. 7-9.

Weber State 2, Idaho State 0. I guess the Vikings will have to win it on the road to get into the tournament.

PSU has a home-field issue I've not heard anyone talk about on this site. This fall I've seen a youth game and a high school playoff game at PSU's Stott field, and it is at the other end of the scale from the superb Merlo Field facility. (PSU Soccer shares the Viking football practice field.) For these games there has been no spectator seating except for those who bring their own portable chairs. The field is narrow and there is very little sideline area. It is cut into the side of a hill. Most of the fans must watch from behind a fence that runs down a sloping hill above the field -- at the highest point maybe 10 feet above the pitch. Fans must stand on the brick base of the fence and hang over the metal rail to watch.
Just saying: this is no place to attract a home crowd.

They don't play their games at Stott field. They play at the Tualatin Hills soccer fields, which is a pretty nice facility with stands. Still, your point is well taken. It's a location far from campus, so only the most committed fans will take the trip out there.

They tried PGE park for a while, but the Nexturf field was horrible and hard as a rock. the ball bounced 30 feet in the air - I hated watching games on that turf. The Timbers replaced the Nexturf with the latest and greatest Fieldturf. Maybe it's better now.

They are definitely going to have to get a stadium on campus for the sport to take off.

Thanks for the info, Geezaldinho. Tualatin Hills is a nice facility but it's not even in the same county as PSU.
