Rampone's is an interesting story. Formerly Christie Pierce, she was also a co-Captain of Monmouth's basketball team and starting point guard.
She was trying out for the WNT at the same time her basketball team was making a bid for the tournament and had to skip a bunch of the key games. That was back when UNC had a lock on the WNT.

Portland Moves to #3 in team goals against average and Kelsey slides up to #2. The good teams are starting to shake out and move to the top.

GREAT JOB!

I'd be very happy if Kelsey was never considered for any awards other than being on a championship team. I'm sure she and Garrett both feel the same way.

If your keeper is getting awards, it means your defense sucks and she's working hard.

I want to see her leaning on the post filing her nails.

Wrong Monmouth...

Post by FANatic on Thu Oct 09, 2008 8:41 am

Big OOOPS for FANatic. I confused New Jersey's D1 Monmouth University with Oregon's D3 Monmouth College. Embarassed

(Both have women's soccer teams and I've seen Oregon's Monmouth's scores in the newspapers for years. Just reacted and thought it was them, not knowing they were D3.)

Christie Rampone never played a game for a U.S. Youth National Team. She didn’t play in the Olympic Development Program, and heck, she didn’t even go to college on a soccer scholarship.

When invited via fax and mailed airline ticket to her first training camp in 1997 (she had never spoken to anyone with U.S. Soccer prior to getting on the plane), she had so little concept of what it meant to play for National Team that she brought all her own training gear, and the laundry detergent to wash it. She even brought her own sheets and blankets.

Those who were there will tell you that she didn’t say more than a few words the entire camp.

One of the few conversations went like this:

“Where do you go to college?,” she was asked.
“Monmouth, in New Jersey,” she answered.
“Is that Division III?”
“Um, no, we’re Division I.”

Today, 10 years and 179 caps later, she is the captain of the U.S. Women’s National Team

I cut and pasted an excerpt from USSoccer.com that I remembered reading about Christie Rampone. I love how she wasn't cuddled through the national youth programs and ODPs...and then especially showing up for her first Senior Team camp with her own sheets, blankets and laundry detergent. That's so endearing and makes her the perfect choice for Captain. As I read her story again....it reminded me of Keelin's quick rise and emergence unto the national and international stage!!

GO PILOTS!!!

Just one small point from a guy who is very red in the face.

Western Oregon University was initially founded in 1856 by pioneers who named it Monmouth University. I don't believe it kept that name for too long. (See Wiki below.)

Wiki - 1856 Monmouth U.

I'm curious about the guy or gal who noticed Rampone's potential and had the foresight to invite her to the Senior National Camp? Was it a Pilot who scouted her? Odds are....Yes, huh? Was Clive involved? Very Happy

GO PILOTS!!!

Thanks for taking attention away from me, Phantom. Just not my day today.

BTW - great find on the Christie Rampone article. Simply a classic tale of the American dream come true for one young lady.

Simply amazing and inspiring and a story worth spreading around. (Okay, spreaders, get to work!) Read

The US coach at the time (1997) was Tony Dicicco, Clive was u20 women's coach from 1993-1995, so I don't think we can give him credit. He was coaching the men's u23's and was assistant on the men's full team then.

A forward in college, she was one of a long line of non-UNC players who was offered a spot on the WNT if she played out of position (Macmillan made the team as a mid about that time). UNC players got the forward spots on the National team. About the only exception was Tiff.

My dad will tell you that "back in my day..." Sleep Very Happy it was Oregon College of Education (maybe not that long ago). I can remember when it went from a State College to a University along with Eastern and Southern.

You would be amazed at how much the network of US National Team Coaches communicate cross gender and age to point out players to each other. If Clive was aware of Christine Rampone playing in his backyard. Tony heard about it. Of course the ultimate decision was for the head coach but they all rely on one another to spot talent wherever they find it. The soccer coaching world is such a small circle its erie. Even the club coaches all know each other from all different places on the globe.
