MLS buzz?

Post by onetouchfutbol on Mon Oct 06, 2008 9:10 am

Who is drawing the most MLS buzz from this years' team? Is Irwins' son, Frankie Lopez, or anyone else grabbing the attention of the league?

By the way, did anyone catch Conor Casey's recent hat trick for Colorado? That was impressive.

Go Pilots! Suspect

Honestly I have no idea, but Collen Warner is the best player on the field for the Pilots. He would definitely get some serious interest if he left after this season... likely from European clubs as well.

Lopez is really talented but is a bit small and is young too... he probably could get signed somewhere though. He's legit.

The other big prospect on the roster is Austin Guerrero the goalie. He's a pro for sure, and I high-level one at that. I think he's terrific.

Bryan Irwin..... not sure about him. He's got size and heart, but isn't tremendously talented. Have to wait and see on that one.

Leeland Wright could have a chance with his speed... Logan Emory is also a solid player.

Actually for Europe he's not too young at all or too small..I haven't seen Lopez play this year.. Stevie Churundolo..5'6". Bundesliga player, Everyone knows how well he's doing..Matty D. is 5'6" and 145 and playing in Europe..He's seen two 1st team bundesliga (friendlies) this year and playing regularly for the Arminia Bielefeld reserves.. 2 goals and 6 assists in 9 games. Alex Elliot..5'8" maybe...playing in Europe too.

I know the push is for bigger players, especially in the MLS...Bu there will always be a place for the smaller, quick players who produce. Spain had one of if not the smallest team in the Euros.

As for the other players..There seems to be a pretty good network of guys (especially in Germany) who are getting trials for UP players who are interested in testing the waters in Europe.

Nice to hear that Dallman is doing so well! I'm not surprised... I thought he was an excellent player that kind of got overlooked while at UP. I think if he would have still been on the team last year they could have done a lot better. Actually... imagine this year's team with Elliott. Sigh.............

I know it was an issue with both players..They wanted to be there, but both had European hopes and knew that waiting until after graduation would almost kill their hopes. It's basically impossible for a field player (not keeper) to get on a team as a rookie pro at 22 in Europe.

So if you go the graduation "on time" route..and you have the capability to play at the next level..you're kinda stuck with the MLS. And when you sign in the MLS..They own you for 4 years at crappy wages.

Oh yeah... I totally understand. I mean, they've got to do what they've got to do, especially if they want to have an opportunity to play at the highest levels.

It's just mere wishful thinking on my part. I mean, if you think about all the talent that UP lost in the 2000s... this is just off the top of my head, but guys who left early:

Heath Pearce
Connor Casey
Kelly Gray
Nate Jaqua
Alex Salazar
Matt Dallman
Alex Elliott
Josh Simpson

I'm sure there are more...

Great list, Stonehouse. I'm impressed with how well you keep up with UP soccer as well as basketball. I would tend to agree that guys like Churundolo are kind of rare now... I would absolutely love to have another UP player join Kasy for the FC Sounders when that action starts. I put forward the idea of having the Seattle chapter of the alumni club go to a few games, and it looks like that's going to fly.

Go Pilots!

Hmmmmm. . . Portland Pilots. . . Portland Timbers. . . Clive Charles. . . Shouldn't there be some local loyalty here??? Personally, I am a Pilots and Timbers die hard. I can't and won't support a Seattle club, EVER.
