Re: Penn State game
The Penn State website has the headline
I had never seen the word used in that context before, so I looked it up.
I guess its right -- we smoked 'em.
no. 4 Portland Scathes by no. 22 Penn State
I had never seen the word used in that context before, so I looked it up.
scathe (sk)
tr.v. scathed, scath·ing, scathes
1. To harm or injure, especially by fire.
[Middle English skathen, from Old Norse skadha.]
I guess its right -- we smoked 'em.

Re: Penn State game
I guess the PSU couldn't bring himself to write the appropriate word he was thinking of there "skates"
I love the skewed reporting. I have never heard a save described this way
Its like saying "Schoepfer was on the break-away.... As she launched her shot Davis was forced to raise her hands up and move one step to her left to prevent the goal." Too much. Herman Trophy watch-list member must be for those who get to watch someone from a top four team get the Trophy.

M.A.C. Hermann Trophy watch-list member Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) had two huge opportunities late in the first half. After receiving the ball from Zoe Bouchelle (Cockeysville, Md.), Schoepfer was on the break-away passing the defense and finding herself one-on-one with Davis. As she launched her shot, Davis was forced to sprawl out to prevent the goal. Shortly after, Schoepfer got another shot by herself which ended up deflecting off the right pole.

Well, I wouldn't call 4-1 "skating" by. I'm going with Geezer and saying we smoked 'em.

Re: Penn State game
Back from the game. I will have a more extensive recap later, but I will say that the game was closer than the score would have you believe. Penn State had a lot of shots, and one that beat everybody, including Kelsey, but went off the post. Both teams were playing pretty rough, due to the conditions, I believe, but it seemed to me that Keelin got the worst of it. She was down and up again quite a bit. Still managed to out leap everyone to get to the headers, though.
Michelle O and Kassie are doing a bang up job in the central defense. It was clear that Korie couldn't quite keep up with PSU's speedy forwards (they were playing a bit of the Route 1 game, but it was nearly effective multiple times) so I was glad to see Kassie really working out in that position.
Penn State fought hard all game long, and if I didn't know the scoreline deep in the second half, I might have been concerned. We're really going to miss Enyeart and Keelin during the playoffs.

Re: Penn State game
What you say is true. The box score listed Kelsey having to make 6 saves that means there were four more shots on frame that what even the Penn State article described.

Re: Penn State game
yeah, and the box lists no pipe shots, but game descriptions tell of at least 1 for each side.

Re: Penn State game
I watched the game via the video that was accessible from the Penn State site. I, too, thought that the game looked considerably closer than the 4-1 score indicates.
#28 Danielle Toney is big & fast & outran our defense early in the match; she also scored their only goal. But she didn't play much in either half.
We have quite a few offensive weapons, but I think Enyeart is the center of the offense. When she is up top and gets the ball, she makes things happen. She can outrun or outmaneuver the defense. And even if she doesn't score herself, she opens things up for others. Her crosses from the side set up the last 2 scores in this game. And Foxhoven's great positioning and finishes have often been set up by maneuvering by Michelle.
Elli made her presence known also. The PSU announcers commented favorably on Michelle's and Elli's play. Workhorse efforts again from Megan R and Keelin.
I think the wet conditions in both games this weekend negatively affected our touch game more than they did the opposition (and recall UCLA in the tournament last year). But we've got to play in the conditions presented.

Re: Penn State game
By what I am putting together, There were two offside goals called back on PSU and at least one of the post that beat Kelsey and Co according to NP put that together with the header off the corner kick that went over the top and its conceivable we could have lost 5-4!
I am speculating that is what at least contributed to the game feeling closer than the score. You how it feels when our goals get called back for offside. You kind of feel emotionally like you still scored. Unless the players offside were really blatant. Dang I wish I could have seen that.
Big ten has its own tv channel. Wish we could get that kind of exposure. Not even the Pac 10 gets it.

To change the subject for just one sec: This topic's 99 posts is an all-time Pilot Nation record. The record for Views is still a few hundred away.
Boy, isn't this PSU match generating big-time interest or what?
(We already this morning smashed the all-time people on Pilot Nation at the same time by darn near double!!!!!)
Pilot Nation members and guests ROCK (or whatever)!!!

FAN I think the information vacuum caused by 1. away game, 2. no live stats 3. Hasty short reporting by both schools caused the feeding frenzy this morning.

Re: Penn State game
I think the most important aspect of the weekend, as Garrett suggested, was that this young team came away with two hard fought, physical W's in terrible conditions, across the country, against two quality programs!
They may not have been pretty, but they show up as gritty wins!!

The Tribune has the best description of the game so far, and tells of the travel woes our u20's had to go through. It was worse than I thought it would be.

Re: Penn State game
Road trip musings: 2 goals by Jackman turned out to be huge ... who would have predicted this was her weekend to shine? And a goal by Olivier! Goes to show that the whole team from starters to subs to defenders can AND MUST step up every game. The fact that the Pilots can shuttle players in and out and still get a great result speaks to the skill and preparations by the coaching staff to have everyone game-ready.
Foxhoven will surely miss Enyeart toward playoff time -- they have a rapport that's hard to match.
Friday's game vs UW gives us Portlanders a chance to stand up and cheer the team for a great road weekend.
With all the different people adding their thoughts and news and links and even an eyewitness account, Pilot Nation did build a picture of the Penn Sate game for us diehard fans. Thanks to all! Makes me glad to be able to see the team in person soon, and it reminds me of our duty and pleasure to send along a clear picture of the game to those who can't be at Merlo.

I think that makes a lot of sense, Auto. (Sometimes I need a good kick upside the head to bring me back down to reality.)
However, while I certainly agree with you, I still believe it shows how popular the Pilots are getting. Their mainstream media coverage has never been better. (Oldtimers correct me if I'm wrong on this.)
I just can't imagine that many folks on PN one year ago. I remember last season we had road games where GameTracker was really dodgy, and several of us huddled in the chatbox trying to figure out what was going on. Sometimes the main topics would be void of people and we just had our little chatbox to console ourselves.

My memory is admittedly not too reliable. Anyone concur with what I'm trying to say, or dispute what I'm trying to say?
I just think we've grown substantially in a year, and I believe there are probably a lot of guests logged on just checking out what they've been reading in the paper or seeing on TV.
(Boy, I feel like I just ran a marathon. Gotta rest for a bit.)
