Tony Diccico has announced the players for the next tune-up round.

This time UP players Ellie Reed (as a defender) and Michelle Enyeart (forward) are named. Keelin isn't mentioned this time around.

Has anyone heard more about whether the U20s will be red-shirting or available for the season, at least most of it? I just listened to a UNC interview with Anson Dorrance, who is talking about the UNC U20s as though he is expecting them to be playing for UNC this Fall. He also mentions talking recently to Tony DeCicco, although not in relation to the question whether the U20s will have too much national team duty to be playing college ball.

I know there was discussion at one point that the UNC U20 players had decided they would not red-shirt this year. Maybe it's a team-by-team decision, with the players not red-shirting having to miss a certain amount of the college season playing for U20 camps but otherwise being available for their teams. (And also having to miss the Tournament part of the college season due to the U20 World Cup.)

It also was interesting hearing how Dorrance uses UNC players' histories of advancing from college to the WNT as recruiting bait. This is going to help the Pilots team more and more with recruiting, as the top players always are looking for how they can advance through the national team system. Plus, Bill Irwin being coach of the U23s, especially with their success, will add to that.

The discussion wasn't about whether UNC players would redshirt, as I recall, It was about whether Dorrance would release his players to play for the National team. This was before Diccico was appointed as u20 coach. Had Diccico not been appointed, it would have marked the first time in 30 years that Dorrance or a Dorrance ally was not a National team coach.

Once Diccico was appointed, That issue went away.

Not discussed in the interview was how Dorrance used appointments to the national teams as direct recruiting tools. There were cases where players leaning towards another team were given a WNT cap as high school players, a not-so-subtle reminder of where the control over National team appointments resided. Players would then sign for UNC and never see another WNT cap again.


Another thing about that interview was the whole discussion about how strikers and defenders are interchangeable. He recruited all strikers this year. I guess the message is that if you don't score in the three week practice period, you'll be given a low number.



There is another interesting development with respect to the u20's. They are now holding their final selection camp in New Jersey . It appears that Fla. State now has new exposure to having multiple players on the u20's, as does Portland and UNC. Here's the list:

It looks like there are other potential players who will not be attending the camp in New Jersey. For example, Casey Nogueira (UNC), Jessica McDonald (UNC if she manages to get past the Admissions Department, which she hasn't so far), Kelley O'Hara (Stanford - top scorer for U20s, with Enyeart), Kristin Olsen (USC), Kristen Arnold (TAMU). It looks to me like there are about 35 players in the overall pool they are looking at.

On further checking, I see that of the 28 players on the New Jersey camp list, DeCicco will be selecting 20 to go to England to play the Arsenal and Chelsea women's teams on August 1 and 5. I'm guessing there will be a number of camps throughout the Fall, possibly followed by games, with a variety of players involved. Who knows when the final selection will occur for the U20 World Cup. Maybe I should do some research to see if I can find the deadline for submitting rosters.

After even further checking, the roster is to have 21 players, of which 3 must be GKs. The deadline for submitting the roster is 10 working days before the opening match of the final competition. The final competition is November 19 to December 7, so the deadline is November 5.

If anything, this leaves me with bigger questions about whether players will red-shirt.

One of the speculations was that Dorrance would allow his players to play in the run-up to the games but withhold them for the finals. Sounds really paranoid, I know, but he's done as bad before.

Here's an excerpt (p.23)

2. The final team list of the 21 players (three of whom shall be goalkeepers)
selected to participate in the final competition shall be submitted to the
FIFA general secretariat, using the official form, at least ten working
days before the opening match of the final competition, as stipulated
in the relevant circular. The players on the final team list must be
chosen from the players on the provisional list.

there is no limit on the number of players on the provisional list.

I've always been puzzled by that sort of wording. the majority of the world works six or seven days a week.

The u20's finished their camp in New Jersey, Now Dicicco is taking them to England to play the Chelsea and Arsenal women's sides.

It makes sense if the Rapinoes and everyone else is back - and then add the SuperFrosh, and look out!

The word from England is that the U20's played the Everton women's team a couple of days ago and lost 1-0. Today they played the Arsenal women's team and lost 3-1 (this is supposed to be the best team in England). They will play the Chelsea womens team early next week before returning to the U.S.

All of the Portland girls are playing in the games (no word on amount of play time) and remain healthy.

The U20's defeated the Chelsea women's team 2-1 today.

They travel home tomorrow.

For UP,his info is that the three US u20's will NOT redshirt, and that Sophie is done with Youth Soccer. We pretty much knew that, but it' nice to hear it from somewhere else.

here's the 18 players he says are going for the USA. That leaves 3 undecided.

Geez - GREAT news confirming your feeling that Sophie is through with youth soccer. That means, once she gets here, she's here for the "whole nine yards"!!! (whatever that means.....)

And hey - I don't see Keelin's name on that list! Could it be Garrett put his foot down and said two players is enough? And with some inexperience in the back, maybe he said, "Keelin - you're too valuable to us. Defense wins championships. And we've still got plenty of offensive weapons without Enyeart and Reed".

Ah jeez. I should have proof read it. Keelin is in for sure.

The article says that 90 percent of the team will come off the team that went to England... Keelin did not go to England, but WILL be on the team.

Okay...so we lose three great players for the playoffs...

However, Keelin's loss is definitely counterbalanced by Sophie and our quality depth with tall, strong players. And if all our attackers stay healthy, Michelle E. and Elli will be missed, but it will be a wonderful opportunity for Danielle, Charney, et al.

And by playoff time, (can you imagine us not making the playoffs?), those young players won't be rookies any longer. And you can bet the bank that Garrett will be giving his youthful charges plenty of opportunities during the season to develop, grow, and become true seasoned Pilots!!!
