Pilots vs. Western Oregon
Might as well get this thread fired up for tonight's game. The Wolves are a pretty average Division II squad, and all that I know comes from watching them pound my Division III Willamette Bearcats last year. My prediction: it's pretty close early, but once the offense gets rolling and the defense clamps down, Pilots run away with it. 94-57.

Did they have Liam Hughes and that other big guy when you saw them?

I needed a new heel for my shoe so I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. Give me five bees for a quarter you'd say. Now where were we, oh ya. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because if the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...."

Didn't have Hughes, but they did have one big guy who was something like 7-12 from the field. Can't remember his name, though.

Re: Pilots vs. Western Oregon
34-32 at the half. Seems like our old shooting bug has returned - just 34% from the field so far.
Caveat - Raivio hit a sweet 3 right before halftime, and it was awesome to hear "Raivio for three!!!" over the PA system.

45-42 midway through the second half. Too close for my liking. We're still only shooting 34%!

Re: Pilots vs. Western Oregon
I can't believe this is happening. Western is up 63-62 with 35 seconds left.

Ugh. What a forgettable outcome. I wouldn't take this too seriously, though, as it is only an exhibition. Hopefully Rev and the staff were able to gage the strengths and weaknesses of the team reasonably well and will be able to work out the bugs before any real games.

Re: Pilots vs. Western Oregon
Dear oh dear oh dear... that was NOT encouraging. I'm not going to get too stressed about it - obviously we were using lots of different line-ups and over half the team was playing its first collegiate game - but still... you've got to be able to put a team like that away.
Anyway, clearly the team has a long way to go... but I did think that Raivio looked pretty solid and that Knutson had a pretty good game. Sikma played OK too... definitely can see some potential there. But really no one else stepped up - Smeulders looked bad and picked up way too many quick fouls. Sherrard decided to start trying only in the last two minutes. Ito's shot was way off... though maybe that's excusable due to the fact that he missed lots of practice and his family situation. Thompson was firing up bricks and Carter looked awful. Niedermeyer played well in the first half but contributes hustle more than scoring. Stohl didn't do anything, though in fairness he didn't really have a chance to do anything. Hannibal made a few buckets and did OK I suppose.
But hey - got to give credit to Western Oregon. They hung in there and made the plays and shots when they needed to.
Ugh... I'm going to go to bed and sleep on it.

Not much to say...
We looked flat out awful tonight... but i guess that is to be expected with such a young & inexperienced team in their 1st game.
I really wanted Ito and Watson to step up and take charge of the team, and neither really did... Sherrard got fired up for a couple minutes, but not much resulted from it.
While this was depressing, hopefully it is rock bottom and only upwards from here...
