PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland Pilots junior pitcher Zach Varce and senior catcher Rocky Gale were both selected on the second day of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft. Varce went to the New York Yankees in the 11th round, while the San Diego Padres selected Gale in the 24th round.

Varce, a right-hander who was taken with the 355th overall pick, was nearly unhittable at times as he made the transition from UP’s closer last year to the No. 1 starter this spring. The Seattle, Wash., ...

Wow... this is very good news for the Pilots!

http://tribstar.com/sports/x657346441/NCAA-cross-country-nationals-changing-courses

The NCAA is finally going to start rotating the XC national meet. All of Portland's top runners will be juniors and seniors in 2011, and who knows what kind of recruits we'll have in by then as well.... I know it sounds crazy, but could there be a better place for UP to gun for a national championship than at a meet in our own backyard? I love it!!!

The complete list of men's cross country recruits is on the athletic department website. No one is quite at the level of last year's top two recruits, but a very good top four in this year's group, it seems. We'll have another very strong team this fall, one that should place a little higher at nationals than last year's team. 2011, however, just might be when everything is positioned for that elusive top-five national finish, barring unforseen events.

This is a huge game for UP in terms of boosting RPI (yes, we are in the hunt fora possible at-large bid to the tournament!) and it's a great chance to come out and support the team. Plus, there will be food and drink specials for all Pilot fans!!!

At this moment, ESPN says that UP is the 64th of 64 teams to make it into the bracket. Whew! Not much of a margin for error, huh? But still... how awesome is it that our baseball team is projected as an at-large bid this late into the season? Amazing, amazing, amazing!

Nice article by Norm Maves. And the delicious irony of this paragraph can't be overlooked:

The 30-9 Portland Pilots. They fly considerably under the radar of the two big Division I baseball stories in Oregon this season -- the dramatic rise of the expansion Ducks (30-14, 10-8 Pac-10) and the precipitous current freefall at Oregon State (21-17, 4-11) -- but their accomplishments are just as noteworthy.

Hmm... exactly which news organization's fault is that?

Anyway, here's the link:
