Seattle U thread

Now I know the Pilots go to Gonzaga next week, but first things first--Seattle comes to town tomorrow afternoon. If you take out the games against teams that aren't DI, SU is 4-5. They lost to PSU twice and Oregon State last week, and of course beat LMU New Year's Day. This looks like a game the Pilots should win, especially at home, but they shouldn't be taking anyone lightly. A win to close out the non-conference schedule would be a nice boost going into the Kennel.

I've got to say... it was pretty darn cool to see how well they travelled. They organized a rooter bus and the visiting section was full of alums rooting for Seattle U. They brought cheerleaders and some students came down too... I was very impressed. But most of all, I was impressed by their school president sitting in the front row behind the bench, cheering on the team and giving happy thumbs ups and handshakes to the Seattle U fans. BYU game

Not much positive can be said about this game. The team was totally outplayed by BYU. Carly K. played very little until the last 5 minutes and when she did get in at the end of the game she played very well. I'm not sure why she has been relegated to the bench lately.

3 WCC Officials Suspended for allowing illegal substitutions

3 WCC Referee's were suspended by WCC Commish Jamie Z. after allowing illegal substitution's in the Santa Clara vrs UTEP game. The sub's were allowed at the end of the game.

It would'nt surprise me if Libby was involved. The ref's will be suspended for the first WCC game, I'm to lazy to lookup on google which ref's were involved or if it affects the referee's at the Zaggete game in Spokane for the Pilots.

Little did I realize that 38 years later, we would still only have one major league franchise. (Oh well...)

2009 WCC Time!

Well here we go... it's time to kick off WCC play this Saturday @ GU.

How do you guys think the WCC is going to shake out? 1st & 2nd seem a lock to GU and SMC, USD is re-appearing and would be a good bet for 3rd place, but not a given. 4th place, and a bye in the first round of the tourney, is there for us to take, if we can edge out USF & SCU... Pepp & LMU seem to be at the bottom.

I love the fact that we can now get a decent radio signal. I vivdly remember the days when it was, well,.. really bad reception.

For those who listen on the radio, I'd like to know what you think of the play by play guy. He does an ok job of describing the action. But I wish he would get a little more excited at appropriate times during the action. I'd like to know he bleeds a little purple. This is not a case where the play by play announcer needs to be completely unbiased and show ...

With 30-something bowls coming up, which games other than the local schools will draw your attention? Perhaps the train wreck that is Notre Dame? I think not on Christmas Eve. Is Boise State for real? Will LSU (defending champ?!) continue to lose? Will Alabama have any interest in playing Utah? Will tOSU continue their trend of getting blown out in BCS bowls? Will any fans follow Mizzou and Northwestern to the Alamo Bowl? Will BC or Vanderbilt win the Brain Bowl?

You've got to love how both of the Portland vs. Gonzaga games are televised this year on FSN and ESPN2. That really jumped out at me when I saw the schedule. With Gonzaga really fading and a player like Heyfvelt not really playing to his strengths, we've got a good shot at getting the first one...a great shot.

I would imagine many of the players will be drafted and in season during the Nordic Cup in July. The talented defenders you mentioned as missing would probably be unavailable for Nordic Cup training camp and games.

I think I've complained about this before, but to me... one of the biggest detriments to international soccer and why it isn't as popular in the US is the insufferable amount of flopping. Check this out:

I know FIFA encourages refs to card that type of behavior, but how often do they actually see it... I really think they need to start looking at video and start handing out fines and suspensions. Crap like this is sadly just too common.

The u20's are now in Temuco getting ready for tomorrow's game against china that will determine their seed in the knockout round.

They apparently are unscathed from Vulcan's restlessness.

The Pilots got up big in the first half, then almost lost the lead in the second. Neither team was shooting well at all--painful to watch at times. They hit a three in the last minute with the shot clock expiring to give them a 4 point lead and put away the win.

Jessica Clemens had a great game today, and Carly collected a bunch of blocked shots.

There was a guy at the press table by the Pilot bench and it looked like he was on the phone the whole game. Anybody know who that was and ...

It's strange because they put their last two games at home (Colgate and Dartmouth) on the internet streaming CSTV. One would think they would put their championship game of their own tourney on internet too.

I am in Vegas this weekend and was hopeing I could watch via TV or internet.

(By the way, indoor training for the 2009 season begins at the start of the 2nd semester. I think that's January 5th, and I believe it is mandatory, leading up to spring scrimmages and the end of the semester and school year.)

So I am hearing some rumor that there is snow or something in Portland. From my recollection, a dusting of snow pretty much shuts the city down. Which means not many people are driving. And all students are gone for winter/ Holiday/ Christmas/ Kwanza/ whatever is appropriate to call it break. From what I have heard, attendance at the games has not been great. Which means it will probably be worse, which means that everyone should be able to squeeze into Howard Hall. Just saying...

I love KenPom... lots of great stats, easy to see opponents schedules/results, great rankings, etc.

One thing that he does is project out results for the season once there are enough games to get some data in there. As of right now, he predicts Portland to finish 17-11 (18-11 assuming a win over Seattle... he doesn't rank non-D1 teams) with an 8-6 record in WCC - losing to GU and SMC twice and at USF and at Santa Clara.

I watched them at Hawaii tourney on ESPN. One game the freshmen were great,and Porter looked good. The other game so,so? Natron(SP) is the only one on their team who looked great,and consistent. If Kramer,Robin,and Luke can box him and the freshman from Chicago off the boards I think the Pilot's will do great,otherwise ???. Porter is not Aaron Brooks for sure,I think T.J. will do Ok on him. Oh, the Portland freshman is looking great at off-guard but he's not quite to Nik's level YET thank goodness. ...
